It’s risky. But Indy had boatloads of cap space and reason to believe they can fix him.
It's not the cap hit, it's the draft picks. They have to hope he plays well.

I have my doubts.
Worst case if he flames out, Indy is only giving up a third round pick this year and a second round pick next year... that’s not a bad risk given the potential upside. [Reply]
I think this makes sense for the Colts. He will be protected there with a running game and solid defense. But its not like they have much receiving talent. Going to be interesting. [Reply]

Yep. It's not a good deal for the colts because the most likely outcome is the worst. He comes in and is just decent, say 14th best qb in the league. So you can't bench him and keep the first next year because he will win some games, but you also aren't winning the super bowl either. You are about to lose all of your cap space that you worked so hard for. And they still have a big question at left tackle and WRs at all, unless the 5 games a year TY hilton plays counts. This is just putting your team in purgatory, just like the chiefs getting smith was. [Reply]

The Colts better hope that either Wentz turns into the franchise QB he was originally thought to be when drafted #2 overall by the Eagles or that it turns into an Alex Smith-stop gap situation with the Chiefs where Wentz keeps the team competitive for a few years until the Colts are in a position to draft a legit franchise QB.
