3 years left on his deal, scheduled to make $20M in 2024.

More about San Francisco 49ers All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams holding out in an attempt to get his contract adjusted:https://t.co/mnlFZ4bXH2

That OL would be SO bad without Williams. Like possibly the worst in the NFL.

wasn't he the highest paid o-lineman ever when he signed the deal?

And he's made 'only' about $73 million in his 4 years in SF.

I mean the CLEAR best LT in football has cost them $18 million/season for the last 4 seasons. They've gotten a bargain on him and if they only pay him $20 million this season, they'll get 5 seasons for less than $100 million for a guy playing at a HoF level.

And they can cut him as soon as they feel so inclined so at no point will he be able to recoup that money; the moment he's making $30 million, he's gone. His 2026 salary is only $22 million so at that point the 49ers pay him less than $120 million for the peak of an almost certain HoF career.

This makes all the sense in the world from his standpoint. And frankly, he has $170 million in career earnings -- he could walk away for good and it wouldn't matter a bit to him.

Yeah, SF is gonna have to guarantee some money or come up with a bonus. I don't think he's gonna blink here.

It’s crazy how close we were to the 49ers winning 8 Lombardis instead 5 (2 against us and the one against the Ravens).

I do love that the fans of that franchise absolutely despise the Chiefs. After all those retread QBs, they hate us right now.

should these players stop signing longer term deals? Because I'm pretty sure I saw headlines stating he was the highest paid o-lineman, maybe even highest paid non-QB deal. But I'm not sure. The shit goes up every year so if it's going to bother you, don't sign for longer than 2 years.

Just like Mike Pennel did when he pancaked him in the Super Bowl.

The problem, such as it is, with short term deals is that you don't get the big signing bonus because teams can't fit it under the cap if it's not pro-rated.

So you sign a '5 year' deal with a $40 million signing bonus and lets say $10 million in salary in the first two years for easy math. That's pretty palatable under the cap for teams. But it isn't if that's a 2 year deal. They're taking $26 million in the cap over those 2 years in scenario A and $50 million on the cap under option B. Not only does A give them immediate flexibility but also creates substantial potential rollover to pay for subsequent seasons.

And if you were to instead pursue shorter term contracts with guaranteed money, you're still getting $25 million/season instead of a $42ish million chunk immediately upon signing. I mean it's all monopoly money, but getting an additional $17 million upon signing is real money NOW instead of having to wait nearly 2 years to get it all. And again, any of this presumes that a quality team that you want to play for can actually manage that under the cap - many (most) can't.

Both sides went into this at arm's length. Williams knew he didn't have money guaranteed at the end. SF knew Williams was a possible holdout candidate when that day got here. But they wanted to win now and but/for the baddest MFer on earth, it would've worked out for them.

Looking at the Niners cap situation. For 2024 they look $31M under, but for 2025 they are $39M OVER. Then in 2026 and 2027 they are in the bottom 7 of the league in available cap space. This can all be misleading based on contract situations, but it sure does look like things would be tight even if they didn't have to give Purdy his money next year.

Purdy won't get much in the way of new money in 2025 or likely even 2026.

He'll sign the new deal in 2025 probably but it won't start until the extension kicks in in 2026. And the year 1 salary of that deal will likely be very low.

Of course that presumes they decide to pay him. Kyle Shanahan has enough control there that they may just not. Shanahan almost seems to view QB the same way his pop viewed RBs.

He believes - maybe correctly - that they're a product of his system and surrounding talent. And honestly, he likely has 2 SB trophies right now if he got QB better QB play. I think deep down he knows that.

So he may well decide to move on from Purdy rather than pay him. And it may work out really well for him.

If he holds out half the year, maybe he can make it through the post season healthy?
