Did anyone hear in the SVP show when Scott asked when Bill knew he was going to be something special, and he said the first time he watched him in high school, and said he got mad at a 5'11" kid and started chasing him all over the court, and he saw how athletic he was and he said he looked over to Coach Townsend and said "this kid is going to be a No. 1 pick in the NBA". It's a true story. Embiid talked about it years ago. Self actually told him that too but Embiid didn't believe him and thought it was just a recruiting ploy by Self. [Reply]
Doesn't surprise me that Self recognized that so quickly.
I also think anybody who watched Embiid in his one season here knew he was likely to be the best player in that draft and almost certainly a HOF level talent. He had ridiculous movement/coordination/fluidity for someone his size and was doing things at that age that the vast majority of NBA players don't do for their entire careers.
Of course, that one short season wasn't gonna be enough to overcome the years of Wiggins hype built up from his early HS days to make him the #1 pick, but those teams certainly wish they took him now. [Reply]

I thought he had HOF potential.
And watching the way he shot free throws, I thought he would be able to develop a three point shot even though he wasn't yet that good of a shooter.
But it was only potential.
He was a true seven footer that already had back and foot problems as a college freshman. There was also no real way of knowing if he would have the hunger and focus to be a HOF even if his health allowed it.
But yes, I told my buddies at the time I would take him first overall. Best chance of winning a title. [Reply]

Iowa State favored by 4.5 today in Ames. It won't be that close. Horrible match up for this team. I hope they surprise us and show us something. [Reply]
