The players hate the tag, and the Chiefs seem to avoid it at all costs. I can't remember the last one before Dee Ford, who said he was fine with getting tagged, and also was then traded.
If we win the Supey this year, then I'm sure he'll live with a tag if it means us signing Reek/OBJ. Would really love to see EB finally hired to get those XT picks.

In the draft hopefully get a 2nd pass catcher-I'd look hard at Williams. If our DRs say he's gonna be back to normal then I'm taking him if he falls to us. Sit him and get him ready. If that works out, we just got a top 15 WR for a major discount.

How many picks would we get for EB?

I believe it's two 3rd's-one this year and one next. That goes for either EB or Poley who's up for a couple of teams GM spot.

It is one 3rd round comp pick 2 consecutive years.

If "he'll live" with the tag, why not just negotiate a contract at the same rate? By definition, tagging a player means forcing them to do something they don't want to do. I think Matthieu deserves better than that.

I don't think he will. He's rapidly approaching an age where getting a long term contract is probably not going to happen. Placing the tag on him ensures that his chances go down even more. He would probably not go for that and that would be a bad look for our front office.

We're going to get our best evaluation of him going forward. Particularly interested to see what happens if we end up rematching with the Bengals and/or Titans.

For so long you've focused on just being Deberg. Finally you've posted something that validates the latter half of your username.

There's nothing to be gained from tagging him. We've seen him adapt to this system, we've seen Mahomes adapt to him.

Don't expect him to get much better, don't expect him to get any worse. Ask yourself if this is a situation you'd be happy with for the next 5 years.

If it is, sign him long-term. If it isn't, trade him and try to find someone else. Throw some cash at Terron Armstead if necessary. Cornelius Lucas perhaps. Find a veteran FA and move on.

But all tagging the dude is going to do is make him more expensive if/when you do extend him, less valuable if/when you do trade him next season and just a tick older when his long-term deal starts.

He's shown as much as he needs to show to draw a conclusion one way or the other as to his long-term viability here.
As long as the money works (I'm looking at you Frank Clark) I'm persuaded. Sign him long-term and be done with it.

I mean, we already made him the highest paid safety in the league when we got him, or so I thought. He's since won (fingers crossed) 2 chips and been there 3 times in a row. His play has gone down from last year too. One would hope that there's room for negotiation and to help the team out.

That said if it comes between losing him, losing Tyreek or our 25 yr old LT well..... that's not really a choice. He is heart and soul of this defense it makes sense for both parties to work something out.

Top Ten Left Tackle contracts for money according to OTC.
Trent Williams age 34 contract $138,060,000 for $23M per year.
David Bakhtari age 31 contract $92,000,000 for $23M per year.
Laremy Tunsil age 28 contract $66,000,000 for $22 M per year.
Ronnie Stanley age 28 contract $98,750,000 for $19.750 M per year.
Kolton Miller age 27 contract $54,015,000 for $18 M per year.
Garrett Bolles age 30 contract $68,000,000 for $17 M per year.
Taylor Lewan age 31 contract $80,000,000 for $16 M per year.
Jordan Mailata age 25 contract $64,000,000 for $16 M per year.
Donavan Smith age 29 contract $31,000,000 for $15.5 M per year.
Taylor Decker age 29 contract $59,650,000 for $14.9 M per year.

To keep Orlando Brown, the Chiefs will have to pay.

In 2021 Franchise Tag for OL was $14,178,000.

So, Chiefs try to sell Orlando Brown on the benefits of being on the Chiefs and see if they can get a contract between $15 M to $17 M. If not, they use the tag and try and get Brown's replacement for the following year and groom them to be ready.

They aren’t going to lowball him and get him to sign. Pay the man and don’t worry about LT for the next 5-6 years.

I think you tag him because you're in a cap crunch next year and then pay him.

He's not as good as the Top 5, there, but that's the money he'll command anyway. He's good enough and if you give Mahomes decent enough protection you're set. He does that.
