He was the real deal and not acknowledged as much by my father, earlier on. I had a Johnny Cash greatist hits cassette I used to make him listen to when we'd drive from Blue Springs to Carthage to visit his mom.
Dad didn't like Hank Jr or Johnny Cash - but did like Willie Nelson and Merle and a few others, Charlie Pride. Ugghhh - Nelson was dope though.
I'm really about to crash so sorry if that made no sense
JC found a new audience with the hipster crowd before he died... which was cool but I never really understood it. If it lead to any more young people "stumbling upon" his great classics though it was fine with me.
For my late father. This has always struck me as his/our familys story
Scarecrow on a wooden cross
blackbird in the barn
400 empty acres that used to be my farm
grew up like my daddy did, my grandpa built this land
when I was 5 I walked the fields while grandpa held my hand
Rain on the scarecrow
blood on the plow
this land fed a nation
this land made me proud
well son I'm just sorry there's no legacy for ya now
rain on the scarecrow, blood on the plow
the crops we grew last summer weren't enough to pay the loan
couldn't buy the seed to plant this spring and the farmers bank forclosed
called my old friend Shepman up to auction off the land
he said john it's just my job and I hope you understand
hey callin it your job ol hoss sure dont make it right
but if you want me to I'll say a prayer for your soul tonight
grandma's on the front porch with a bible in her hand
sometimes I hear her singin take me to the promised land
when you take away a mans dignity he can't work his fields and cows well
blood on the scarecrow, blood on the plow
blood on the scarecrow, blood on the plow
there's 97 crosses planted in the courthouse yard
for 97 familys who lost 97 farms
I think about my grandpa, my neighbors and my name
and sometimes I feel like dying like that scarcrow in the rain
rain on the scarecrow, blood on the plow
this land fed a nation, this land made me (so) proud
well son I'm just sorry there's just memorys for ya now
rain on the scarecrow, blood on the plow.... etc
yes I did it from my head so sorry for any typos lol

Good with your father too.
Dad died 5 years ago in 3 more days. We were one of the first small family farms that had to go to auction when the farm crisis hit in the 80's. Dad worked at a casino and for the city after that. We'll always be a farm family though.
