NFL statement: “The email from Jon Gruden denigrating DeMaurice Smith is appalling, abhorrent and wholly contrary to the NFL’s values. We condemn the statement and regret any harm that its publication may inflict on Mr. Smith or anyone else.” https://t.co/b9IUku9saH
There are a lot of terrible things about this Gruden story but I can't get over Bruce Allen forcing Washington's cheerleaders to do a topless photoshoot and then using his team email account to send the pictures to Gruden

They probably made a deal with him. Resign and we won’t release the rest.
I have no doubt the NFL has way worse emails but from reading up on this they couldn't really suspend him so they were pressuring the Raiders do it by the drip drip of these emails. [Reply]

This is a 'protecting the shield' firing. It's not just the Smith stuff, it's not just the Goodell stuff, it's not just the homophobic or mysognistic stuff - it's the totality of it all. The reveal hurts the NFL's brand. This isn't strictly a cancel culture issue - this is an economic decision.
If you work in an industry and you're talking shit about your boss, your employees, your suppliers, etc, and all of that becomes public, you better believe your employment might become untenable.
