Nzoner's Game Room>***The Official EMAW Repository thread***
Saulbadguy 11:54 AM 11-15-2009
I know there are enough of us to participate in this thread, even when our seasons inevitably go to shit.

KSU vs Western Illinois today, tip-off at 3:00 pm.

One thing I noticed near the end of the game on Friday night - we had 5 true freshman on the court, and still played sound basketball. None of them were scrub walk-ons either. While I don't think we will make a serious run at anything this year, the foundation is being laid for a solid program in the future.

It's a great site. There are some very thorough posters on the site and they tend to attract some of the reporters that cover the Cats for local rags.

For instance, you recall our recent conversations on SLTH's? And how many posters here (especially KU fans) tend to fall into the trap of thinking those hires are good? (Sadler, BDZ, McDermott, Wooly).

One of the guys on that site dug up a great piece on the thinking of schools who decide not to "win at all costs". It was from "Black Shoe Diaries", a blog about Penn State athletics. In particular was some great information on why PSU has been a doormat. It's very close to the thinking that led to KSU basketball being a doormat for 20 years.

Check it out.

Reading this quote you could substitute NU, CU, KSU (of the last 20 years) and ISU with Pen State and it would still ring true. The only difference is that each of the Big XII teams pays there Bball coach MORE than PSU.

They're making the best (give or take an eleven game losing streak) of a bad situation. Penn State basketball is essentially the Pittsburgh Pirates of Big Ten basketball. Fans go through the same ritual every season -- irrational hope spawned by a theory something along the lines of, "well, if everything breaks right and a few teams catch the bubonic plague, we could be on the NCAA bubble."

Winning basketball hasn't been a priority at Penn State for decades, if ever. Looking at the last 40 years, you could count Penn State's NCAA tournament apperances on one hand -- and still have two fingers with nothing to do. Coaches are permitted to chug along for as long as they run a clean, relatively congenial ship. Say what you want about the way this season has unfolded, but the team hasn't quit yet, which prompted me to drop this comment in the "Buzzer Beaten" recap thread after the Minnesota game:

After a miraculous recovery from "Mono" to play Wednesday, it's being rumored that Warren is out today because he "tweaked" an ankle.

he tweaked it late in the game against TT. Be nice if he is indeed out. I'm still perplexed by the whole Tiny Gallon thing...

Warren should have went to the NBA last year but he'll certainly go this year. It seems like his coach doesn't like him at all (and he may have his reasons).
