YOUNG AMERICANS
The USMNT was by far the youngest team to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, garnering valuable experience going through the rigors of World Cup qualifying. Through 14 qualifiers, the USA Starting XI came in at an average of 23.82, almost two years younger than the next closest team, Ghana at 25.67. Together, the other 31 participating teams averaged a Starting XI age of 27.5 through qualifying, nearly four full years older than the U.S. Sources say this is one of the youngest, but most talented teams the U.S. has ever fielded. While they may not win the world cup this year, they may garner the experience needed to make a serious run on home soil in the year 2026 when the World Cup comes back to North America.

Haven't seen a Japanese team choke that badly since WW2.

Didn't affect Croatia's shooters. Of course the players are worn out, but they're not being asked to run a marathon.

I think players shoot low too often. They give the goalie a great chance of saving it if he guesses correctly.

statistically, shooting down the middle scores best, but i imagine it's because of the surprise element. you can't overdo it.

With the first penalty shootout of this World Cup I figured now is a good time to remind people that old school MLS penalties rule them all

soccer is just better with old school MLS penalties

Great penalty takers normally hit with power, such that even if the keeper is right they can’t save it. If you look at someone like Kane, the keeper can guess right and the shot is still under him before he hits the ground. You can’t leave the shot close to the keeper as the Japanese players did unless it’s really going to be driven.

there was some interesting data done on penalties that showed older players are better at them. that's not overly surprising, but it was neat to see it actually confirmed. players aged 32-33 made the highest percentage.

That's how we had to do it in high school. It was so much harder than a regular PK. The goalie charging out and cutting the angle made it difficult. My strategy was always to take one small touch and then blast a shot before the keeper got out to narrow the angle.
