I was wondering exactly how Ward fared. I saw him make a couple nice plays, including that great tackle along the sideline and the nice pass defensed, but I didn't get around to really looking at his numbers or paying attention to him in the replays I watched after the game. But it didn't seem like his name was being mentioned a lot during the game after a catch. [Reply]
The more I think about it the more it makes sense why the defense could struggle at times. Of our defensive draft picks the past two drafts very few are contributing at all right now due to injury, inexperience, etc.
In 2020 we took Gay, Sneed, Danna, and Keyes. Gay is too inexperience to be dependable, Sneed flashed early but was working his way back from injury, Keyes is raw, and Danna flashed early but hasn't been the same since his injury.
In 2019 we took Thornhill, Saunders, and Fenton. Fenton is clearly the best of the bunch and is playing fairly well. Saunders had his injury early in the season, returned briefly against Denver, and hasn't played since. Thornhill probably can't be counted on for much this year IMO.
Factor in Clark, Jones, and HB not playing up to their potential lately and you have the recipe for a decline on defense. We've just had some really shitty luck with injuries and the shortened offseason hurting the development of just about every young player on defense. [Reply]
I don't put much into PFF grades, but I believe he had one of the worst on the team. Should be valuable experience, however, and hopefully he learns from his mistakes and improves. [Reply]
