Nzoner's Game Room>2019 Free agency Thread
O.city 03:24 PM 02-05-2019
We don't really have one of these yet, so figured we could use this as a place to discuss potential free agent acquisitions and what we would like to look for them to bring in.

If any of you guys are interested, heres a good place to do some research.

Above average is strong.

He wasn't good at anything. He was a mid to late 2nd round rookie so expectations should be set at that.

He played out of position and didn't have an offseason to workout.

I guess.

DJ said he was a supporter from day 1.

I'll tell you this, if Speaks is THAT terrible, then the Chiefs are freaking screwed because KPass is even worse.

Elite tools don't count for squat if they don't produce results, something Ford only did in 2 of his 5 seasons. He's SUCH a great player. I can't believe they let him go!
I’m so damn happy we got a 2020 2nd for Fraud, er Ford. I don’t believe he was worth anything near $15 million a year. His speed and low center of gravity were great last year, and he def added some moves to his game, but I believe he’s a liability against the run, doesn’t seal the edge, and is going to spend more time on the injury list than field for the Niners the next few years. Great guy, but a 1 year wonder overrated football player.

I'm no fan of Speaks, but if you're wondering what the team even saw in Speaks, you could just ask Veach yourselves:

He talks about him at about 2:40

I'm guessing this is what they saw in Speaks. It's certainly not "nothing".

Holy hell Mitch Morse’s head got cracked too many times. The man really does have CTE!

Your bias is showing.
And to build on this a little bit.

When you say my 'bias' is showing, I presume you're speaking to my favorable opinion of Ford.

I have a bias, but it's not to Ford. I had no personal reason to like Ford when we took him (though I do like him now, having heard him for several years).

But when it comes to first and second day picks, I am an unabashed tools whore. I have conceded this point for MANY years. When you compare Speaks to K-Pass, I'm annoyed by those picks for very different reasons. My problem with the K-Pass pick wasn't who he is, but rather who is is NOT. I wanted Kamara. Kamara was a no-brainer of a pick there and by taking K-Pass I thought we fucked up mightily.

But at least with K-Pass I saw a glimmer of hope that we might be able to coach him up to use significant physical gifts. There's no salary cap on coaching, man - go get yourself a badass staff and use 'em. Teach these guys with tools for days how to play football.

Speaks, OTOH, simply doesn't have those. My problem with Speaks wasn't that I wanted someone else, it's that I didn't want him. To use the ol' 'decision lens' terminology, he's simply never someone I would've taken in the first 2 days. He's a 4th round pick for me; a plodder with limited ceiling who even the best coaching in the world could get you to maybe a solid DE.

The only way he can be more than that is if he completely transforms his entire body. Well hell, now you have TWO areas of emphasis, you need physique and technique. That, my friends, is not a 2nd day draft choice.

So yeah, my 'bias' is showing. My bias on high-end picks is that I want guys with tools that can be developed.

Speaks doesn't have those.

What was Morse supposed to say? "I'm here for the wings and the snow."?
