Simply put, it’s wrong.

#Chiefs CB Steven Nelson (92.7 PFF Overall Grade) was
@PFF
's top-graded player last night. He was targeted six times and only allowed two receptions for 33 yards.

Over the past six games, Nelson has only allowed 264 yards while being targeted 42 times.

He’s having a pretty good season, and at least half of CP thinks he sucks. It’s a shame.

Another good week. Outside of that one play he was awesome today, and he made up for it with the INT to seal the game immediately after.

Currently PFF’s #24 corner with a “good” grade. Should move up after this week I’m guessing.

I thought the DB's looked good. Now if we could defense a screen to the RBs...

Agreed.

We'll get another week of how shitty the defense is and blah blah blah but the secondary actually looked good in coverage today. Tackling was rough and the pass rush was virtually non-existent, especially given how lousy the Browns OL is, but the coverage was quite good.

The chiefs absolutely have to secure HFA throughout. That defense just has no fire on the road. I was just irritated by how indifferent the box defenders appeared most of the day.

I talked about that with my BIL DJ. They just seem like they don't really give a damn the majority of the time. I dunno if it's because they know "eh, we didn't get a turnover, the offense will score in 4 plays anyway".

When they seem to give a shit, they play well. When they don't, they don't.

Houston's return could help.

He's always been a fierce but understated leader. Could see him keeping the defense on its toes.

I also wonder if the intensity of the playoffs won't fix that anyway. That may be why HFA hasn't mastered for KC in the playoffs - the opponent isn't going to come out flat in the post-season. So if we don't get HFA, maybe the defense uses the playoff adrenaline as a proxy for HFA...

I can't believe that Scandrick is playing so well.

Hopefully.

The unicorn that is Eric Berry would really help too, but well, who knows about that.

Nelson has been good. I would actually resign the guy if not too expensive.

He is obviously not a top CB but a good #2 CB.

The Chiefs have a pretty good track record of DBs playing up on this squad. Guys that have left over the last several years have gotten worse, guys that have come here have gotten better.

It's not been universal and it hasn't carried over to all positions on the defense, but as far as DBs go, there's a good chance that DBs are gonna play better here than they would've played elsewhere.

I'd be hesitant to re do Nelson to a very big deal, especially seeing what #2 guys get these days.

That's what coaching and draft picks are for fellas. Draft a guy, coach him up for pennies and go from there.

However, with the lack of CB's we have under contract for next year, you may have to keep him around.

Nelson brings a grit that the rest of the current Secondary just does not have. He's a tough buggar.

I think you're talking $6-7 million on the low end, to be honest.

Is his resume any worse than what Hayden or Robey-Coleman took into FA last year? I don't think it is at all. Frankly, it's probably better. TJ Carrie snagged nearly $8 million/season and I think Nelson's showing out easily as well as Carrie did last season, probably better.

Robey-Coleman is at the bottom of your range there at a tick over $5 million with Carrie just under 8. He's not gonna stay under the radar like Gaines or jump into the CB1 tier like Fuller did, but if Aaron Colvin can go out there and get $8 million as a CB3 who's being brought in as a likely Nickel, then Nelson establishing himself as a potential starting #2 is gonna get paid.

You ready to get into that $8-9 million range if the market comes together for him? It very well could. The Chiefs need someone like Ward or Smith to step into that role in a big way next season and I'll be honesty - they should try HARD to get Fuller extended this off-season to keep him out of the market, especially coming off what appears to potentially be a down season for him.

I don't know that he sucks. He certainly has some wtf moments, but overall he's solid. The issue will be re-signing him. I think his floor is around $7 million per. You look at a guy like Bobby McCain from Miami, essentially the same type of guy with spot starting duty and then gets an extension at $6.75 per.

Do you really spend that on Nelson or do you spend a bit more and maybe get a guy like Ronald Darby and draft a slot guy?

That's what i'd be afraid of.

Fuller seems to be playing better as the season is wearing on, but whats the saying, high tides raise all ships?

As the cap goes up, contracts go up. It's just whats gonna happen. It's also what makes hitting on draft picks so important. I'm not sure what you do in the secondary next year. They don't really have a whole hell of a lot of options. Everyone will say "they've got 55 mil in cap space" but that's gonna get eat up pretty quick with some in house extensions.

Plus, in reality looking around the league, that's not a whole lot. Some of these shit bird teams have 70 mil. You just are gonna have a tough time bidding with that.

Whats killing the Chiefs is these damn albatross defensive shitty contracts. Berry, Houston and Hitch need to get their shit together and contribute.

If they only had your All Pro Marcus Peters back, they would be all set. :-)
