Media Center>I'm Finally Giving Up My Flip Phone
Dinny Bossa Nova 08:12 PM 01-05-2018
I fear change.

I got underwear that are part of...

Well...

Let's talk about Dinny's new phone!

Don't care about internet GBs. Want to take good low-light videos & pics with a good mic w/overload protect with lots of storage space.

You know, for like, band stuff.

And I want the texts I receive to not be a bunch of gobbledy-gook.

Hate .MOV files. Want Microsoft friendly? Or what?

TIA
Dinny

I recently got the iPhone 8 plus. I have never bought a phone when it comes out so I usually get the model a year or two older. I had a Samsung Galaxy 5 for about three years and it was fine but the last probably 6 months it had no battery life and would regularly need to be recharged throughout the day.

The camera on this iPhone really nice. It has a portrait mode which is actually comparable to our nice Canon camera because it uses a 1.8 f stop whereas our standard len only goes to 4 and and we would have to spend another $100 to get a lens that goes that low.

Beyond that it’s just kind of a standard smart phone. I don’t think the screen changed much from so older ones not do I think it can really get better. I do know it will not be able to be useful in a few years because Apple seems to push out updates that purposely render old models useless.

Here are a few pictures of our dog in portrait mode to get that good blurred effect in the background. Really nice to be able to take this quality right on your phone. I don’t know enough about the specifications though to know how well these would print out. I’m guessing not as clear as our nice camera.

I am here at this very moment to tell all of you that I have not been this down-hearted since the day that woman drug me kicking and screaming (against my will) to the used phone store to replace my Motorola Razr. Tough day, that.

I have to let go because my bass player let go of his flip phone because he got a new Apple for Christmas, and even MY MOM gave up her flip phone a couple months ago and got some kind of phone that is too big for her head.

Fucking turncoats.

I'd hold out, but people with new phones send texts that are all garbled and don't make any sense at all.

I say technology has gone too far. They should have got to the Shure Vocal Master & quit.

I'm gonna make a bunch of notes from this thread and go to the used store and the Verizon store where we got our service.

Fuck!

I have two old Motorola flip phones squirreled away in my dresser. One is a red Razor, the other didn't "flip" but was the same basic size. I've had an IPhone 6 since August. I like being able to get internet stuff on it. And I love my phone company Straight Talk. I dumped Sprint after 20 years. Best move ever.

If you have a few extra hundred to spend buy an iPhone, they have their place, but as a first smart phone? Nope. If you use a PC then a Droid phone will do you just fine.

Get a service that uses SIM cards and you can buy and sell phones as much as you want in case you want more from the phone in the future.

iPhones are proprietary, expensive, and over rated as are Mac computers. If you need one that's fine most don't.
I forgot to add "excepting cooper barrett" in the OP.

No offense, coop, but NO ONE, not even a saintly old bossa novalist such as myself gives the slightest fuck about what you think.

if anyone has xfinity internet, you can get a mobile phone bill for free based on usage. I dont use my mobile data so my monthly phone bill is 23 dollars a month which is the price of the phone, if you pay it all at once, well your cell phone bill is free. xfinity also uses the version cell towers.

:-) Disregard this advice, Dinny. It's not meant for you or any other person asking for advice about dipping their toes in the smart phone water for the first time. It sounds more like it's intended as self-aggrandizement by the poster. iPhone would be fine for you, but might cost a little more. Android would be fine too, but marginally less so. You don't have to get into the tech weeds that much with either.

Gonna spend about $50 on a flip phone and how much do you think a decent camera is going to cost you that would match the quality of iPhone or Samsung? 300? 400? 500?

You could get a new phone of last years models and be just as well off and only have to carry 1 device with the included benefits of a smart phone.

I've been looking at a new phone as well because my LG G2 is starting to show its age with random freezes and self reboots. I'm also a bang for my buck kind of person so I'm not about to go out and drop $800 for $200 phone like an iPhone or Samsung, so I'm always looking at last years models. Oneplus 3T, LG G6, and ZTE Axon 7s (apparently only sold to Chinese government) have all caught my eye in terms of value per dollar.
You pay for data every month on a smart phone.

I've had a flip phone now for about 17 years. Currently I have the AT&T Go phone. The phone was $10 at Walmart and I buy a 1000 minutes a year for $100, I'll usually have 900 minutes roll over. We don't have much use for a phone and I use my home computer for everything that I really need.

However, I know a lot of people are joining Movie Pass. For $10 a month you can go to any movie theater and see a movie everyday of the month. One film and you've paid for the plan. Here's the problem, I've been told you need a smart phone to join because you need the ap to purchase the ticket outside the theater.

If this is the case, what's the minimum smart phone I could get that wouldn't be a piece of junk and maybe someday I would actually find other uses for it. I hear some people get the phone for hardly nothing because the phone company makes their money on the plans. Others I heard pay hundreds of dollars for a phone. What's the reason for that if you can get phone for nothing?

I have a samsung and like the android system.

If you do not like the layout, you can get a different launcher and customize the way the screen look, I did Nova Launcher.

You will learn it all.

I don’t really know about that movie pass thing but if doesn’t require a data plan or phone connection you could just get any cheap smart phone off of Amazon and use WiFi at the movie theater if available to make the in app purchases. I assume movie theaters wifi. You may want to see if that’s an option for what you are talking about.
