Come on guys stay on topic the WHO said that about alcohol because of the effects it has on the lungs. Sugar has no affect on your lungs. You know the organ mostly affected by a respiratory virus.

Its 39 grams of sugar so if you consume 6 a day it's over a half pound of sugar to put it in perspective.

Everything is bad for you. If you don’t do anything you will live forever.

Without going the DC route, I’ll just say that the WHO should focus on bigger issues than telling people not to drink alcohol as a supposed mitigation factor against COVID-19.

Comparatively there are no health benefits to even a moderate consumption of refined carbohydrate products such as white bread, sugary sodas, etc.
The meta-analysis that I'm talking about was concerning resveratrol, not alcohol consumption. You need to keep your story straight.

The study that I referenced, which concerns alcohol and the global burden of disease, finds that: "We found that the risk of all-cause mortality, and of cancers specifically, rises with increasing levels of consumption, and the level of consumption that minimises health loss is zero."

Unless you are part of a subset with established ischemic heart disease or mild diabetes, alcohol does not have protective effects, and in those cases, it is only for very small amounts of consumption due to its antiplatelet activity for the former and inhibition of hepatic gluconeogenesis for the latter.
