IMHO, most training camps go with there veterans and projected staters longer to get the reps in camp. A rookie must really shine in limited # of reps.

How many reps did each get in training camp?
I can't answer this one, it's something only football teams do, maybe you can answer it ?

How many tackles did each make?
Not sure, Scanlon had more tackles than Mitchell did in less time during preseason games. And yes, Mitchell played against 2nd and 3rd string players as well.

How are they working both of them in practice?
As of the start of the season, the 1 or 2 practices per week are light and in shells. The starters get the bulk of the work for game day preperation.Backups are used mostly on scout teams drills.

Who is practicing with what unit?
Rich was selected for practice team beginning the year, thus running the scout teams drills, not ours, there fore not able todo anything with our 1st team D. Currently he is on the team due to injuries, awaiting time to play and still runnning scout team drills and playing on ST's.

What kinds of plays are they giving each person snaps on?
I haven't a clue as to what this is ?

Is Scanlon good at following the run?Yes, reports out of college was he was excellent against the run and good tackler.

Can he stay at home on misdirection?
Reports out of college said he was very smart and disicpine when caught in a mistake, he recovers quickly with good angles to the ball.

Who can block him and who can't?
Reports from college , Anybody, but it's not easy, he uses his hands, arms and feet well when sheading blockers. I read somewhere he was 3rd in the nation for individual tackles ( season )

Can Scanlon play special teams as well as Mitchell?
Yes, very good special teams player in college, currently playing ST's with the Chiefs. Has good speed, eludes blockers and a good tackler, the same qualitys that made him a top MLB in college.

Can he play the same position?

Again, I haven't a clue as to what you are asking, but I'll take a stab, can he play MLB and ST's , yes and yes.

Does this clear anything up for you ?
So basically, you don't know anything the rest of us don't, and really have no basis by which to say he wasn't given a chance at the job.

Ok, since the ball is in your court, how much of what I just told you did you already know ?

I had already heard from you Scanlon pimps that he was a beast in college. I never disputed that. But there is a difference between being dominant at a lower level of football and even being qualified to play in the NFL. You're basing your whole 'he isnt being given a chance' argument on nothing but "reports from college" and "I dont know but...".

You know, a lot of people were in here after last year's draft saying that Kawika Mitchell was a complete animal in college too.

Mitchell did play in a small school from a small confrence against much weaker talent than Rich played against the Big East Conference.

I believe the Big East had some pretty tough schools and kids with talent.

Again, DV has his opinion on Mitchell, they were using him more in TC to get the reps, Mitchell had many questions even after starting 7 games last year. I'm quite sure the reps were not divided up equally.

In due time, Rich will be in the NFLE, getting more reps, I'm convinced he will over come the odds and land a starting position before long, if not here, then someplace in the NFL.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

After all this Scanlon/Richard Smith fun I'm ticked I missed out on having an adopted Chief/pimp player for the year...

Scanlon had his entire college career and the combine the impress the scouts and coaches. In that time he was less impressive than Mitchell (and many, many other LBs). If his options are now limited to practice squad, emergencies and NFL Europe, it is his own doing. If one day Scanlon becomes a productive NFL linebacker then good for him (and good for the Chiefs if it is with us). If not, who really cares? It is absurd to invest so much hope in this guy. He has done nothing to merit such hope.

That's one way to look at it, it's also absurd to continue with Mitchell as poorly as he has played without letting others have the chance of the American Dream.

IMHO, give this kid 3 - 4 games and Mitchell will forever be a backup player and ST's player.

He's a rookie free agent. Everyone said he won't make it past camp. He did. Everyone said he won't make it off the practice squad. He did. You don't know what the **** he is capable of because they haven't really played him. They haven't played him because he is new, and for some god foresaken reason, DV thinks that playing a shitty vet is somehow a better move than giving a rookie a chance. Bullshit. The team loses anyway. So, take a chance.

That said, he wasn't perfect when he started college, but he became captain, a leader, and a damn good linebacker who moved from the outside to the inside. He's a very smart man. And, I know personally, how hard he works.

I have been enjoying just reading this thread, but I must interject here. Do you want to know why Richie made it past camp on to the practice squad, and is now suiting up? Injuries, pure and simple. Had it not been for injuries to our LB corp, he never would have made it past camp. If you truly knew what an H-Back is with out using Google, your football knowledge would be good enough to recognize this clear as day fact.

The guy is undrafted. He cannot beat out a pathetic Mitchell or the guy who has never played MLB before. WTF does that tell you? He was serviceable in college, but is not pro material. Get off his schlong already; your act has gone from providing entertainment to boring as hell.

It's funny, as I was watching the game yesterday I was talking to a fellow fan, who is very knowledgeable about football and the Chiefs in particular, about the state of the team this year and next. Naturally LBs came up (more than once as Mitchell really pisses him) and I don't remember exactly how we got to this point, but he says "You know, in camp we had this guy named Rich Scanlon...." I just busted out in a big ol' shit eatin' grin.

The guy goes to TC every so he sees the players in action. It would appear dear Richie is slow. That seems to be what is holding him back.

He agreed with my sentiment, FWIW, that Scanlon would not have made the practice squad were it not for injuries.
