Nzoner's Game Room>Houston Astros get hammered for cheating
siberian khatru 12:59 PM 01-13-2020

BREAKING: Per sources, MLB’s penalties for #Astros include:

*One-year suspensions for GM Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch.

*Losses of 1st and 2nd round draft picks in both 2020 and ‘21.

*A fine of $5M.

No players were disciplined by Major League Baseball in the Astros' investigation. While Mets manager Carlos Beltran was part of it, he was a player at the time and thus was not suspended.

Discipline for Red Sox manager Alex Cora is coming. It is going to be harsh, per sources.

Jim Crane just fired Jeff Luhnow and AJ Hinch.

Not sure that matters at all. The Astros were caught cheating and deserve everything coming their way.

Everyone involved should have been banned from baseball. The title should be vacated, and they should have a postseason ban for several years like would happen in other sports.

Man City in the Premier League was banned from European competition (basically, soccer's postseason) for two years just for financial reporting irregularities.

I do think at some point the court of public opinion will pressure Manfred enough to strip them of their WS. It’s not dying down, only getting louder.

Never
Manfred works for the owners. There's no way they are going to start any sort of precedent that allows for stripping titles for "cheating" and the bottomless can of worms that would open.

The owners would present a vote of no confidence for Manfraud before that happens.

....

(Goes out to the Internet to check on the Broncos' and Patriots' Super Bowls.)

I don't think it happens in other sports.

It sucks, but there's going to be a surge in attendance at Astros game this season just so fans can boo them and see if any fights go down. The Astros cheating is going to be good for the MLB, at least in the short term.

Just so you know that isn't feasible. There's no way Major League Baseball would ever do this. You'd effectively be killing baseball for three years in the country's seventh-largest TV market and basically telling 2.85 million paying fans (the number of fans who turned out to Minute Maid Park in 2019) that there's no reason to show up at the ballpark for three years. That's the sort of financial hit that the entirety of baseball, not just the Houston Astros, would not be able to recover from.

To hell with them. Baseball recovered from the Black Sox, it recovered from the strike, it'll recover from one big market team being in the doldrums for a couple of years.

Sadly, I agree with you. That's why the players and fans need to take matters into their own hands - because the owners won't adult...

Bellinger/Judge/Trout spoke out pretty loudly yesterday.

I fucking hate owners thinking when it comes to commissioners. Ruin our league, but we'll keep you around as long as profits go up. It's the only reason Manfred is still around. He wasn't good at all before this shit show, but this scandal might put him along the league worst. Pretty bad when you have people longing for bud Selig.
