Cool as all get out.

And we've always called my son our dog's "human"! Like you, the two of them are a team. I may deal with her all day, but when the boy gets home, she's waiting for him.. And I love it that way!

I'm glad you found your kitty. Meesh Meesh gets outside every once in awhile. We have to run and get him quick because he's nearsighted and if he gets far away from home he'd be lost. He likes to sneak out at the most unopportune times too... like if Mrs. B and I are on the way to something and are running late.

Anyway, glad your story had a happy ending.

Poor old Rommel is giving up the ghost on me. We figured last spring that he probably had one more winter in him because he's just aged so much faster than his brother. I always said I wanted 12 healthy years from my labs and that's pretty much exactly what I got; he turned 12 in October and was still as willing as ever to run and play; just couldn't do it as long....{snip}

I'm hoping he can get some nice spring days on the screened in porch before we have to make the call but summer may be tough on him with the heat and the breathing issues.

So I'm not expecting any miracles; there was fluid in his abdomen for a reason, afterall. And that swollen sternal node means something even if nobody knows what. But he's doing pretty well. Think we may get him through to the fall afterall. Wouldn't mind seeing him hit that 13th birthday at least.
Well I'll be damned if that dog didn't go on defying expectations for almost 2 years. After Thanksgiving 2017 we took him in with a limp, bowels he couldn't control and just malaise; we were sure we were losing him then. The folks at MU Veterinary found out he was in heart failure. After a battery of tests, meds (old boy even got put in an experimental treatment with Viagra) and getting on a first name basis with the techs, we kept powering forward.

Made it to not only his 13th birthday, but his 14th as well. And he was as spry as you can expect from an old dog the whole time; really a remarkable recovery for him. Sadly, you can only push back the hands for so long and despite making it about 6 months longer than his optimistic projections back then, his heart finally couldn't do it anymore. On Saturday he let us know he just didn't have it anymore. We put up the tree, he got to eat some food off the babies trays and he just spent the day in the living room with us but he moved maybe 20 feet all day. He didn't eat his dinner and he didn't look up when mom got home. I had to carry him to the car.

I took him into the emergency clinic and they told me what I pretty much already knew; he wasn't hurting and there's nothing acutely wrong with him, but he's not going to improve. He'd gone into congestive heart failure and he just couldn't get the blood to his muscles to have any energy; his valves had finally failed him and his heart had enlarged to the point of nearly useless. There's a cruel irony in the fact that the vet said it's the largest heart she'd ever seen on a dog that size. He wasn't in any pain, but that would come soon enough.

He'd fought the good fight; got my babies through their first 10 months (and let his favorite person, my 4 yr old daughter, transition into big sister mode. She was his best friend so that transition was huge; has helped her handling it so much - I'm unbelievably thankful to him for the last year he gave us). We said our goodbyes on Saturday night. I haven't had the heart to go sifting through pictures and what not so the best I can do is a re-post.

I can't say enough about that dog. My buddy watched the kids that evening and my wife and I went for a few drinks. We have more stories about that knucklehead than our other 2 (and probably the next 3) combined. One of these days I'll sit down and write them all down; will make an interesting little shutterfly book for our oldest if nothing else. I have 3 labs and yet he's always been everyone's favorite; had the staff at MU wrapped around his paw. He loved the trip because he'd just get to hang out in the technicians office all day and see anybody coming and going. 3 different services there knew him by name. My father in law teared up when he heard. Smarter than he let on, sturdy as all hell and sweet to the end; he gave his last to (barely) walk into the office under his own power and gave tail wags and kisses to the vets that helped him pass.

I'll miss the hell out of that dog but from beginning to end I couldn't ask for a damn thing more. Just a perfect companion and family member. It's been a blast, Rommel. Thanks for everything.

Thanks gents.

Yeah, he and his littermate (still kickin') both had green eyes until they were about 6. As they got a little older they turned a bit of a hazel color. And their coats are just this deep dark brown. The eyes definitely stood out against their coloring. Handsome boys, for sure.

It's interesting to see the other two settle into their roles. The older guy has always been boss dog but not the protector; that was Rommel's job. He was the one that stayed by the door until we were all home or barked if he heard something outside. Now Patton's laying in Rommel's old spots just keeping an eye out to make sure things are going how they should. MacArthur has found the 'people' spot on the couch and makes sure he's always by someone. He would do that anyway if he could but Rommel always got first dibs on the best spot. Now you can count on Mac to be there. My wife doesn't have to worry about tripping over anybody when she gets out of bed in the morning but otherwise the other two are picking up the slack where they can.

Dogs are funny creatures, man.
