Media Center>Behind the Curve: Netflix Flat-Earther Doc
Pitt Gorilla 09:39 PM 02-28-2019
It digs into the flat-earth community and gives the viewer a taste of conspiracy theory nutjobs.

I thought it was really interesting, if for no other reason than the inside look at conspiracy theorists. Anyone else watch it?

Whoa shit. I watched this and what a bunch of misguided misfits. Its kind of sad. It really seems like the yearning of believing into conspiracy stuff has alot to do with psychological issues.

You can explain the shadows & the moon, eclipses, space photos etc. They will just spout garbage like "fish eyed lense!" and "Nasa lies" and other such nonsense.

If you ever encounter a flat earther, try to help them instead of dismiss them. They need our help to get out of their own head. If the Earth was flat, then you should be able to use a telescope and watch a ship go all the way from the coast of California to Japan.

Look man. I stood a long way away from Seattle. And I could still see Seattle. IF the earth was really round, I wouldn't be able to do that because of curvature. I don't need Science.. I have my eyes!

This conspiracy, though, is relatively benign compared to a bunch of the other ones. That being said, i'm sure people who believe in Flat Earth probably believe in a whole host of other nonsense, too.

Flat Earthers hate the prevent defense and wish the WR would run beyond the sticks for the first down.

I love the whole "nobody can debunk our numbers!" bit.

Hey dipshit, nobody bothers to debunk the piss-reeking homeless guy wearing a cardboard sign touting the end of the world, either.

I managed to finish this. The laser test at the end was golden. :-)

Some guy paid 20k for a hyper accurate gyroscope that proved all physics correct even though they tried every way to block the effects the “outside” forces. :-)

In the end they just want to be accepted by people like themselves. It’s pretty simple.

Flat earthers could not be more wrong, but then Raiders fans could not be more wrong either.
It would be one thing if we as a society were faced with the threat of a flat earth caucus imposing some kind of flat earth inspired authoritarian regime. But it's just dumb people with dumb notions about reality.
It's no more threatening than astrology, or crystals, or believing that Himalayan salt lamps produce healthy negative ions.
It's considerably less threatening than anti-vaccine, or homeopathy, or centralized federal power.
What could be wrong with thousands of people building a movement that makes itself scientific-evidence resistant?

For the record, the guy and the girl that star in this film are somehow worse at relationships than they are at science.

It seems that way, but people like Taqo John claim they're trying to help others "see the light."

There isn’t an argument the flat earthers made in this documentary that isn’t echoed wholesale by climate change deniers.

No scientists believe your theory? “They can’t! They’d be ostracized from their community if they did!”

“Why can I see stuff far away if the earth is curved?” = “Why is it cold today if the earth is warming?”

“I wish the scientific community was willing to actually debate this issue. Why are they so hellbent in shutting us out?”

“The smartest people on earth have been wrong before! Who’s to say they can’t all be wrong again?”

“Scientists are snobs who think we’re idiots.”

Here’s evidence that mainstream science is correct. “Hoax! It’s an elaborate hoax!”

I mean, the entire documentary is one part allegory, then the other half is an amusing tale of two people who are perfect for each other but refuse to ever seal the deal because they’re worse at relationships than they are at science.

If anything, dipshit, it's the exact opposite. The only difference between flat earthers and global warming/climate change/whatever it's being called at the moment lemmings is that there's no worldwide socialist theft scheme behind flat earth. Other than that, you keep believing the same bullshit fed to you by the same people who are proven wrong over and over and over.

And of course the truth is that the climate HAS ALWAYS CHANGED. It changed before man existed. It changed when man was hunting mammoths with spears. The Sahara was once lush and fertile, but it's a desert now. Massive glaciers once carved the Great Lakes. You going to blame all that on Exxon and coal and too many plastic straws? Idiot.

I guess you're more like cultists who know exactly when the world is going to end, and when that date comes and goes, they just pick another date. Sort of like how the people who think for you absolutely knew for certain that the ice caps would be gone, and the ozone layer would be gone, and sea levels would have flooded coastal regions years ago. Oops.

It's nice that Neil deGrasse Tyson knows the earth is round. But it doesn't change the fact that when it comes to man made climate change he's a heavily compensated shill pushing an agenda. Or that you're buying into it hook, line and sinker. With other people's money, of course.

Just finished it. Its funny that the only two scientific experiments the flat earthers did in the documentary both proved the earth is round. They know deep down they're wrong, but they're all outcasts at this point and need each other just to have some form of human companionship so they will forever go on and keep pretending.

My take after watching this:

These are a mix of fringe of society people looking for companionship and people who enjoy watching a good train wreck or looking for alternative entertainment.

I always thought 'Flat Earth Society' was a metaphor for cynics, conspiracy theorists, and contrarians but some of the people in that video actually seemed determined the earth is flat but for the most part these are furries and juggalos with a higher standard of living.

Heard about this and wanted to watch it to genuinely understand the why? You don't have to be a scientist to see the overwhelming evidence, in spite of that, why still flat earth?

I guess the closest answer, the simple one is that they see conspiracies everywhere. I can see "this", you sheeple are stupid, I'm, right.

Some of you know I've seen behind the curtain. Our government has lied to you about big things. But, Oswald was the only shooter, the moon landing really happened, on 9/11 a plane did crash into the pentagon, our government didn't bring down the twin towers, the earth is round.

And yes, those two are perfect for each other, they need to wake up and hook up. What idiots! How can they not see they are perfect for each other? Morons....
