Nzoner's Game Room>Melvin Gordon Wants a New Contract or Out of the Chargers

Melvin Gordon, entering his fifth season in the NFL and thus still on his rookie deal, is dissatisfied with his contract with the Los Angeles Chargers and is taking those frustrations public:

Los Angeles running back Melvin Gordon has informed the Chargers that unless he receives a new contract, he will not report to training camp and he will demand a trade, his agent Fletcher Smith told ESPN.

Elite backs in the NFL persistently face this issue. The five-year deals for first round picks lock them in at below market wages, and then when they hit their mid to late twenties the teams say they are nearing the end of their useful lives. Last year, Gordon missed four games with an injured knee, but when he was playing he averaged over five yards per carry. Gordon is slated to make $5.6 million this season.

Off the top of my head, if they could make the compensation work the Packers would be a great fit for Gordon. He is from and played college football at Wisconsin, and is the threat to catch passes out of the backfield that Aaron Rodgers has been sorely lacking.

I don't think that's what he is saying.

He's saying Dorsey has a surplus of RB's, and basically hates the chiefs... So is theorizing he trades Hunt to the Chargers just to spite the chiefs.... The Chargers then trades Gordon to a 3rd team (not back to the Browns) for similar compensation for what they gave up (for Hunt).

It's all about the "FU to the Chiefs" conspiracy theory.

Highly unlikely. Doesn't fit the Charger's modus operandi

Tell me more about your dumbass idea though. He's so mad at KC that they've done a trade recently and talked heavily about a lot of other ones.
Why do you feel the need to be such a cock sucker? **** YOU and the horse you rode in on. Because YOU said so, no team EVER trades players who want out, and nobody in the history of the league has ever traded a player in the last year of his contract in a position of deep strength. Just like it's a very realistic possibility that Veach will trade Watkins after this season for the same reason.

You're still a total dip shit. Dorsey is in the business of winning at his job and securing his play of employment and making a trade to spite a team they've traded with and talked over a bunch of other trades is totally fucking idiotic.

Why would he be so mad about getting paid to sit on his ass for 6 months and waltz right into the job where he has total power (that he was never going to get here)?

Maybe step out from the tin foil fortress, buddy. That's before ever even mentioning the Spanos are fucking cheap, so why would they want to trade for another RB that wants a massive deal?

From PFT:

Melvin Gordon, who is holding out of Chargers camp in search of a new contract, says a great running back can’t be replaced. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers may not agree with that.

Although Rivers made a point of saying that Gordon is a good teammate, he also said that the second and third running backs on the roster, Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson are capable of taking on a heavy workload if called upon to do so.

I would hate to be running back. All that pounding and replaced quickly and not paid that much.

My gut feeling is that Justin Jackson will have a breakout season for them and prove that Gordon is expendable.

Though, Justin Jackson flopping could also happen considering the state of their OL, thus tempting the Chargers to pay Gordon who will subsequently come back and flop just as hard because, again, Oline.

Gordon can't make plays by himself. We've seen that in his first two seasons.

Well, all Gordon has to do is look at what happened with PIT and Bell...

He's friends with Bell and thinks Bell did the right thing.....

I get the stances here, Gordon will never have more leverage than he does right now, the Chargers don't want to pay a RB with questionable knees...

The thing is the Chargers window is closing and if they don't pay him they likely fuck themselves and close that window..it's a double edged sword.

Gordon and Elliot have the most leverage right now, hence what they are doing.

You didn't refute anything. You just disagreed with it.

He could be easily, and possibly beneficially, replaced with a budget draft pick.

You didn't refute that. You just said "He's kinda decent'.

It's embarrassing that a guy in that offense could ever rush for less than 4 YPC. Austin Ekeler is actually more productive on a per play basis.

Too bad the chargers are making the right move in staying pat. I want them to give him the sun and the stars. Give him David Johnson money!

Follow along...

If teams are unwilling to pay RBs top dollar, then they surely are not going to be sending a draft pick for the rights to pay one top dollar.

OK, so perhaps there is a team who thinks they are a RB away, but who is it? I don't see it happening. If I was a RB I think I'd want to be drafted in the early rounds, not first round, with hopes that the team will want to extend me before year four. Five years is a lot mileage on a back, even if you are only 26.
