This was a pretty good flick. The most impressive scenes involved horse stunts. Not sure how they do that these days w/PETA and all...
My nitpicks w/Hollywood on these movies though:
Sound effects guys are working too hard. How come every time a guy pulls out a sword from a leather holder, it makes a metal on metal loud swoosh sound? Every damn time. Or when they throw a spear into a guy's chest. Does that really make a sound? Don't think so.
Why do they have to make the hero such a sweetheart? Nice to everybody, let's his nemesis live, chicks dig him, etc. Any historic leader needs to be ruthless, not Mr. Nice Guy.
Can we get some actors w/wooden, missing teeth and scragly hair? These people are just too good looking. [Reply]
So I watched it late a couple nights ago. That was dumb. This is one that sticks with you awhile.
I didn’t know the history of it, so the outcome was kind of in doubt in my head.
The thing that the film really did well was show the suffering he endured.
Spoiler!
His brothers dying, all of his buddies dying and his wife and child in peril - those notes really hit hard for me. Pine really knocked that part of it out of the park. That’s the part that hung around for me.
It also wasn’t what I expected in terms of length of historical events. It’s pretty much one battle. Other stuff happened but it was one battle. But that really allowed them to build up the suffering.
Really well done imo. It didn’t try to do too much and did what it set out to do really well. [Reply]

Isn’t that the crux of the show?

I think it was Douglas that said “This is the price to be king”.
In the war that Wallace led, none of his family died. He was safe, his daughter was a long way away. So then they nuke Wallace and they decide to fight, so he goes and does the things the way they were done then. Proceeds to get EVERYBODY dead and his wife and kid captured.
Then he decides, “fuck this shit” burns down his castle and goes guerrilla. Sneaks up on fools and stabs them in the throat. Isn’t that journey precisely what you were saying he should be?
He let that punk bitch walk away. There is 0% chance you don’t throw his ass in chains and trade him for the wife and daughter.
I was trying to figure out if there is any value in letting that inch know he’s defeated in some type of mental warfare. But I keep coming back that you capture him and get your family back.

What am I missing.
I'm sure it didn't happen that way IRL.
Spoiler!
After the battle, they did say he got his family back in a prisoner exchange and the kind got killed by his own nobles a few years down the line.
But there is something to beating him so soundly and having him suffer the shame. Dude always had an inferiority complex, so losing to Bruce like that and being let go is probably worse than death to him.

I suppose
Spoiler!
10 seconds after it cut away some of the Scotts were just like, "Yeah, no. You're coming with us"

I thought Eddie II killed his daughter, when he was eating with his lieutenant he said he's leaving Bruce heir less

It was worth the time because I'm a bit of a history buff. But, it was made too cheap. I understand battles cost a lot of money. There were a ton more battles not filmed. The final battle in the movie was well done. Unless they are doing a sequel, its just a cheap knockoff. [Reply]
