Nzoner's Game Room>Hiatal Hernia.. WTF?
Kman34 10:02 AM 04-16-2021
I went to the ER in Dec because of Diverticulitis and had a CT scan and one of the things that was on the scan was a Hiatal Hernia.. I went to my Doc for a follow up after and he didn’t think it was a big deal if I wasn’t having any Acid reflux.

Went and had an X-ray today for a shoulder issue and they called and said my Hiatal Hernia was quite large and showed up on the X-ray..
This seems concerning to me and I’m going to make an appointment with a Gastroenterologist...

Do any of you guys have any experience with this condition? I’m currently on a diet but still feel bloated sometimes after eating which is a symptom of this.

You're not going to feel right until you get it fixed. I've never had one but I have had gastric surgery and several people I know that have had my surgery have had related hernias.

I was diagnosed 12 years ago with one at ~32 after I went to the Dr after having chest pains. Which turned out to be a combo of the HH and gas. Its also the cause of my acid reflux, if I keep my weight under control I dont get the reflux. I still have the HH doesn't seem to be an issue.

This is not the same kind of hernia you get lifting stuff incorrectly. I've had that also. I had an inguinal hernia repaired 6 years ago. Those you have to get repaired as it could lead to a colon issue.

I was having bad acid reflux a few years ago. Talked to my doctor about it and he said it was a hiatial hernia. Put me on medication for the acid reflux and I've been fine ever since.

Being on PPI's for extended periods of time really isn't healthy. But I'm not a doctor, just going on the advice of my surgeon.

I think in general it is always best to avoid surgery when possible whether minor or major there is always risk involved and potential long term issues , unless it's affecting your quality of life ie reflux/pain/discomfort/shortness of breath/vomiting , but the specialist will have a better idea .

It might depend on how much stomach is involved increasing risk of strangulation.

Have a pic of the x-ray?

Ive had a hiatal hernia for years. Just medium sized. If I eat too fast it holds some of the food longer making me feel like a softball under my sternum
Acid reflux from time to time.
Just keep an eye out if they also diagnosed you with Barret's Esophagus. That can lead to cancer.
I have an endoscopy check up end of this month.
Not a big deal for 95% of people with one.

What do your Diverticulitis attacks feel like Kman?

Lately, I have had severe left side and abdominal pain. It usually happens every other week. I'm wondering if it's Diverticulitis

It's possible , do you have a known history of diverticulosis , it can feel like an appendix attack but on your left not sure how often it just resolves on it's own without treatment so it is odd that it comes and goes I would think if would just get worse.

The Hernia is higher than my diverticulitis pain.. Yes the Diverticulitis is on my lower left side.. It bothers me with I eat fried food or drink beer.. Red meat makes it act up too.. Sucks because those are the “ good foods”.. lol.. Feels like a like a lump low below my waist line..

The hernia make me feel bloated and some breathing problems if I sit down after a large meal..

I was diagnosed with a Hiatal Hernia by my gastroenterologist about 5 years ago. He discovered it during my colonoscopy.

He told me it was nothing to be concerned about. However, I don't trust him.

For the most part, Im fine. On the occasion, I experience acid reflux and bloating. I belch quite a bit whenever I eat acidic foods or whenever I eat a lot and I get regurgitations here and there.

What I've noticed for myself its a matter of keeping the acidic foods in moderation/under control and not overeating as much.

Hard thing to do because I love some acidic foods and love my cheat days. Meh. It happens the odd time here and there. No biggie. Whenever it does happen, Im certain to stop eating for the day and to no longer consume acidic foods for the day. I also drink baking soda with water and that helps neutralize the acids I find. Its a manageable condition for myself to say the least. But maybe it depends on the severity of it? Mine appears to be minor.
