He avoided being drafted because he made choices (joining the National Guard and going to law school) that Congress valued more highly than conscripted military service. That’s not draft dodging. That’s serving your country, particularly in light of a subsequent career as a civil servant. [Reply]

Going to college is not "dodging the draft", and neither is volunteering for other service. Everyone had those options.
