NFL odds: After Sunday night, Patrick Mahomes is now the overwhelming NFL MVP favorite

Frank Schwab 2 hrs ago

We can cease and desist with any debate about someone other than Patrick Mahomes being the NFL MVP favorite.

You’ll hear people argue that Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson, Alvin Kamara or anyone else should be “in the conversation,” but the only real talk is that the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is the overwhelming favorite until further notice. Everyone else is vying for NFL offensive player of the year, though Mahomes should probably win that too.

Sunday night’s heroics, leading a game-winning drive over the Las Vegas Raiders everyone knew was coming, solidified Mahomes’ position. He’s the best player in football and he’s having a phenomenal year.

The odds at BetMGM reflect that.

Mahomes is -118 to win MVP at BetMGM. Next on the list is Wilson at +350. Aaron Rodgers is +550 and nobody else is less than 12-to-1.

I think Mahomes is more like caviar.

You don’t have to go very far around the Internet to find people who trash the guy. Heck, just look at some of the insane responses on Mahomes’ Twitter account when he writes something completely harmless.

They have the best tight end in the history of football. They have the best offensive scheme mind in the history of football.

Everyone acts like Rodgers couldn't play behind our line. It isn't like we have the worst line in football. Guys like Mahomes who hold onto the ball and then run around to make plays don't do offensive lines any favors. I wouldn't have it any other way but it's the truth. Rodgers can still scramble a little bit, and manipulate the pocket to create angles. He wouldn't just be a sitting duck like Brady if he was behind our line.

To play devils advocate, part of me thinks Mahomes wouldn't be quite as good without Andy Reid. This Andy Reid system is amazing. Just look at the history of Reid's QBs. They aren't great but he routinely makes them look better. He damn near dragged Donovan McNabb to the HOF.
It's probably because people keep saying inaccurate things like this. Green Bay has better RB's (run game), arguably the best WR in football, a well above average TE, as well as one of the best (if not THE best ) OL's in the League. And yes, (due to injuries and Covid) we actually have one of the worst pass protection OL's in the NFL....on a team that relies heavily on passing the ball.

Also, I'm struggling to understand why you think having a shitty OL doesn't make a difference in PMII's effectiveness. Newsflash: When you constantly allow the D to get to the QB and hit him, it has a direct effect on QB play. That sammich hit he took in New Orleans last weekend looked bad. He's taken a shit ton of big hits this year because his pass protection has been awful.

FYI - I think Rodgers has actually earned the MVP this year with the consistency of his play, but PMII is a VERY close 2nd, IMO. What Pat has been able to accomplish behind this OL has been amazing.

So why bring up "weapons" if wins and losses and strength of schedule don't count?

I think Mahomes is more valuable to his team because of the offense both teams run and the line but Rodgers has had a better statistical season and recentism gives Rodgers a big advantage. The Rodgers absolute stinker was so long ago that you really have to dig for it where Mahomes has had some below average games by his standards recently.

Last week for Rodgers?

And the last 8 games, Mahomes was/is on a 5700 yard, 44 TD pace. Below average? :-)

They aren't great but he routinely makes them look better. He damn near dragged Donovan McNabb to the HOF. He made Alex Smith put up HOF numbers in 2018. He finally gets an elite QB in Mahomes and promptly wins the Super Bowl.
Alex Smith never puts up “HOF” numbers (26TD?) in 2017* if he didn’t have Mahomes breathing down his neck. By mid season fans wanted him benched.

Mahomes made Reid a better, more aggressive coach. Our offense isn’t lethargic, we don’t take 40 minutes to run a 2 minute drill. Reid went from a sub .500 playoff coach to an .800 playoff coach with Mahomes. Pat put Reid in the HOF

Reid’s great system produced that magnificent 15 touchdown season by Alex Smith, with more WR screens than a college offense. That anemic offense is what forced Reid to trade up 17 spots to draft the QBOTF.

Back in Philly Reid had a reputation of being carried by his defenses. With the Chiefs, they called him a choker. Reid’s system will get you about 17 points at home if you play like crap, which is usually what we got in January until #15 came along

Posted this in another thread last night, but in the category of needing your best player to play his best, I looked at each of their top 5 games. Had to use the Bears as the Packers' 5th game.

Prior to last night, Rodgers was around 63%, but besides that and yardage, it's really damn close. Mahomes had one really bad quarter in all of that (and still almost threw for 400 yards), while Rodgers has the TB game.

Of course, the more meaningless games against shit opponents will still count towards the vote, but these games are the true mark of 'value', IMO. The Chiefs and Packers don't need their HoF QBs to beat most of the teams they play, obviously.

It'll be Rodgers, and it should be.

I'm totally fine with that, and perfectly happy to trade that for the SB MVP again.

Regular season MVP sure seems like a bad luck charm for winning the Super Bowl through the years. Guess we shall see if Rodgers can pull off both of them.
