Nzoner's Game Room>2019 Free agency Thread
O.city 03:24 PM 02-05-2019
We don't really have one of these yet, so figured we could use this as a place to discuss potential free agent acquisitions and what we would like to look for them to bring in.

If any of you guys are interested, heres a good place to do some research.

Spags system is based on creating pressure with the front 4 and some of you think we’re gonna release 2/3 of our best pass rushers.

There is a reason the guy would get a 5-year 80+$M on the open market.
Then let somebody else give it to him.

Not happening. At least in this offseason.

It's funny to me. Some of you guys talk of Dee Ford's injuries like he was Jason Verrett.

It is absolutely true that he has a history of injuries but after his season last year, a tag is a no brainer and exposes you to little risk as it is a one-year deal.

Oh I know that.

But just because somebody WOULD give him that doesn't mean it's smart to do so.

The market is desperate, not smart. Just look at the Broncos.

I'd rather cut Houston, and sign Flowers, a young ascending player. Tag and trade Ford, nab a #2. Then you can stay put and have a #1 pick and 3 #2's or package some #2's and move up into the first again. Either way you get younger and more talented.

I wouldn't have a problem with this.

If you tag him, you HAVE to cut Houston to pay for it. Berry isn't coming off the books.

Which means their one big move this offseason is to tag Ford.

Improvement on the defense lies with coaching staff changes, the 2018 draft class developing, and this 2019 draft.

Are you comfortable with that?

I'm not signing an outside free agent pass rusher. They're just too expensive and you dont' know about the fit till you get him in the building.

Draft and develop. Sign some mid tier guys if you want.

If you tag him and cut Houston, you're basically sitting where you are right now cap wise.

With how they set up cap numbers and a low first year hit, they could sign a couple guys if they wanted.

The risk is that you're using $15M of 2019 cap on Ford.

He's your 2019 free agency period. Just him.

These dream scenarios involving Collins and Ramsey and all that stuff are just that - dreams.

Tag Ford and cut Houston is essentially a net zero with the cap right? If I'm reading that right.

Those couple of guys aren't going to be Tre Flowers, Landon Collins, or any of that though.

You're talking about 2nd and 3rd tier guys. Your one marquis free agent for the offseason is Dee Ford.

You have $7M in dead money you have to account for, I believe.
