There’s almost no question that this has to be done at some point in the not too distant future. The demographic generational crunch just isn’t going to leave us much alternative.

By the time I'm ready to retire in say 30-35 years, will there be any social security benefits left?

A heavy percentage of the population does not have anything saved. A ton of people that are retirement eligible have nothing or very little. Another large percentage have savings but it wonít last them for a long time.

We canít afford to get rid of it. Millions would be added to the homeless population.

For SS grandfather everyone in born before a specific date. Everyone after gets a full refund. The dumbs will die off in retirement, the smarts will live. And of course it will never happen because it would result in a massive elderly humanitarian crisis.

What if we just phase it out for future generations? Good or bad idea?

Poll does not reflect the spirit of the question stated in the thread title.

With that said, we're prepared to do without either, so get to cutting.

There should be an option to opt out of social security so you can keep and handle your own earned money and people who want the government to take care of them opt in.

I want people like kotter that need the government to find a way to be relevant in life handling my money about as much as want a life size, nude cardboard cut out of Rosie O'Donnell and Whoopie next to my bed.

Boom.

Let me opt out. And put my money elsewhere. Also I want a refund.

Agree with all but the elderly crisis.

Studies show that SS has been hugely beneficial in terms of keeping the elderly out of poverty.

What do you think happens to the huge percentage of the population who are dumb and impoverished that reach retirement age with no savings? When they cannot physically work but have $1000 in their savings account, there are going to be problems. I mean up to 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.

They will never be eliminated.
We will see higher taxes and the Feds continue to play games with IRA rules.
I can also see them coming up with a means (needs) test in the near future for SS.

Sure but those people would have been much better off had their money gone into a fucking IRA or 401k instead of SS
