Nzoner's Game Room>The RUN game
UChieffyBugger 11:26 AM 10-09-2019
Should we be concerned about this right now? Damien can have his moments but as each game goes by you realise he's not one to be grinding out yards. Mccoy has flashed but again he's not best running between the tackles and the coach's don't seem to trust Darwin at the moment despite looking impressive in pre-season. So that leaves Darrel Williams and I was very surprised that he didn't get many touches on Sunday after he performed so well in the the two previous games!!..like WTF is Andy thinking? The offense when healthy is brilliant but come playoff time and in the seasons ahead we're gonna need balance. It's games like Sunday that Kareem's demise really hurts us.

I disagree that Clyde can't be that RB. Andy just failed to use him, especially in the passing game. I don't remember seeing a single screen pass to Clyde or any action in the passing game at all. When we did run with Clyde, he looked pretty good - just didn't do it enough. Also, the Oline is way worse now than it was when Kareem was here. I think Clyde can give us at least 90% of what Kareem did if not more if we merely make the Oline competent (not even great) and actually utilize Clyde.

The Chiefs will never be a grind it out run team as long as Reid and Mahomes are together. It’s just not who Andy Is.
The runs we got were not indicative of a strong run game though. The “blueprint” of getting pressure with the front 4 and dropping everyone else into coverage has been out for a while, but we’ve been able to overcome it with some decent OLine play. We didn’t have that last night and everything fell apart.

Yes, we had a bad run of luck losing OL, but there has to be a counter to how teams are going to play us from now on. Andy likes to talk about making defenses defend the entire field, but they don’t have to do that right now because we aren’t a threat to make them pay for daring us to run.

The great attributes kareem has that Ceh doesn't is an ability to hit a home run, wear down defenses with his physicality and he's a killer in the redzone. That's not Clyde's game and we need to give him a partner who can do those things imo.

It's the blocking. I've been saying this for a couple of years now.

We could kinda run a little when Fisher and Schwartz were in there, but we had to run off-tackle. We've been weak inside since Morse left. Alegretti is a decent LG and when Fisher was in there, you'll notice we could run left a little bit.

There's nothing wrong with Clyde, and I remain convinced that he will be a star...as soon as we have decent offensive line play. No more scrubs.

Agree to disagree I guess. I think Clyde can do those things. We've seen him run with physicality - breaking tackles is a strength of his. Also, I remember a lot of big Kareem runs but not so many home runs. Either way, I think a consistent running game is needed much more than home runs since our O has many other ways of hitting home runs.

The difference is Kareem could carry an offense. Denver away, Chargers at home, Patriots away etc...that's just not Ceh imo. We need teams to fear our run game. We could have the Colts O-line right now and I bet you teams will still double Ty and Trav. So for me we need a better line AND a better RB to go alongside Clyde if we want to take this offense to the next level.

Kareem had more than a few home runs. He could also carry the offense at times...Clyde does not have break-away speed, but he is effective at how he runs. You're right, we need more consistency there. It starts on the OL.

I think Damian Williams will really help. That's how it was supposed to be this season.

How do we know that Clyde can't carry the offense at times if he is given a chance with the same quality of Oline that Kareem had the benefit of running behind? I think Clyde can do it. He's shown flashes but between lack of opportunity (especially in the passing game) and the deterioration of our Oline, we haven't seen what Clyde can fully do yet.

No-one is saying Ceh can't be good...he absolutely can. However giving him a partner like Chubb has Kareem, could take our run game to the next level. We NEED a top eight run game moving forward imo...enough of putting every single thing on Pat's plate.

Should have ran Clyde more in the first half to take pressure off of Patrick running for his life with wet paper sack o line.

I’m not sophisticated enough to watch things and say whether our normal OL is blocking adequately or not. I know Veach seemed to think we were set with his comment about having things blocked for 8yd gains and only getting 3. Clearly though, we aren’t good enough blocking and the run game as well as our deep passing game goes to complete shit when we lose a few guys.

CEH is pretty good, but I think he lacks the speed and size to be a star for us. I don’t mean to hate on the guy, but he didn’t have any real splash plays. He can’t break away like Damien, and isn’t big enough to run through guys. He’s tough and shifty, but that only gets you so far. He didn’t show anything in the screen game either, at least not that I recall. I expect first round guys to have a real impact and he just didn’t. I liked the pick too, but in hindsight I’m not sure that was the best way to go as he hasn’t fixed the run game all by himself. OL was probably the direction we should have gone and taken a different RB later.

Rb's the size of Ceh can't be counted on to be a bellcow if needed. The best run games over the last few years have been collective efforts. Hunt and Chubb, Kamara and Ingram, Freeman and Coleman etc etc. We NEED a combination like this now to put defenses in a bind they simply cannot get out of.

Bump.

The run game remains a problem imo and one 100 yard game from Clyde where he fumbled doesn't prove anything. Williams and Mckinnon obviously aren't guys who are making a big difference right now so our whole ground attack is in the hands of Clyde and when he can't get going it pretty much makes our offense totally one dimensional which plays into defenses hands. Marlon Mack, Todd Gurley whoever, we need another option who can run with aggression and take the rock to the house once in a while. Can anyone remember a long td run from a chiefs RB in recent times? Maybe Williams in the superbowl? It's been too long.

Damien Williams was the last one to break off a long TD run. Any other long run TD was a "pass" to either Hill or Hardman.
