Because you learn the entire octave/harmonic range of music....that and it teaches you how melody/narrative lines correspond with bass elements. Guitar is essentially your right hand ...

It's why most people compose on piano....

Prince had the rare combination of not only being an accomplished musician, singer, producer and songwriter ...but also a great charismatic and stylized performer. One man wrecking crew....women love him.

I don't read and never took lessons. Many of the Composer/Producers that I know are the same, although I know just as many that are schooled as well.

Hans Zimmer is the perfect example of a musician turned film composer that was never schooled.

Did it ever occur to you that he meant add him to the list of the two people Toby knew that picked up music without formal training?

Only complaint about his shows were that he didn't seem to like playing some of his big hits--he'd either skip them or do medleys. And sometimes he'd disappear and let his sax or horn guy noodle on for 10 minutes. On the other hand, he would also throw in some completely unexpected blues and funk covers and just tear them up.

A weird dude, awesome musician.
Leave it to you to post that picture in a thread celebrating a man responsible for more panties dropping than a gynecologist...

A perfect mix of pop, rock and funk

For three years between 6th and 8th grade his poster was the centerpiece of my bedroom... surrounded by KISS, Motley Crue, Joe Delaney, Duran Duran (yep, sorry... yet not), Billy Idol, Walter Payton and apple pie

The pic this video ends with was the poster, dude was cool

the other thing is..

only a few like him and Bowie were allowed to sell out and
keep their creative control at the same time.

most only get one or the other
