I enjoyed TLJ more than TFA. Probably the second most enjoyable SW film under Disney for me behind Rogue One. Solo wasn’t bad but it didn’t really do anything to advance the mythos behind Han.

I get why people don’t like it-it’s completely different from the other films and undermined a lot of what Abrams set up. But Johnson at least tried something to advance the plot of SW. TFA didn’t do that whatsoever.

I think the biggest surprise of all this is that everyone wishes Gareth Edwards or Ron Howard directed 7, 8 or 9.

I'm sure Gareth would have loved to direct it, too. It's really too bad that he and Lucasfilm couldn't come to an agreement over the Rogue One prequel series but Tony Gilroy, who wrote and directed 40% of the film, including the 3rd Act, will kick ass as the screenwriter and director.

BTW, the Rogue One prequel series begins shooting next summer.

One more thing about IX: I was told in the last hour or so that this movie wasn't locked until Saturday, as in December 14th. This past Saturday.

I knew they had filmed multiple endings so I had no idea which ending they'd go with but apparently, the cast and crew hadn't seen the film at any stage, other than when they were shooting, so they all saw it for the first time on Monday night.

Holy balls. That’s not normal is it? That’s cutting it pretty close.

Re: Rogue One Series. Where are they going with that? Didn’t that story kind of, you know, end? I mean if it’s a good story I’ll watch whatever, I’m just curious how it will go.

On the Rogue One series I believe it's supposed to be a prequel.

No. It's completely and utterly abnormal and unprecedented for a blockbuster film.

Personally, I blame Bob Iger for any shortcomings from Episode IX because he refused to change the release date from December 2019 to May 2020, which IMO, would have made perfect sense since the original film was released May 25th, 1977.

It put a massive amount of pressure on Lucasfilm, Chris Terrio and Abrams to write the story, which led to much of it being re-written on set and a massive amount of reshoots, all in far less time that was allocated for TFA and TLJ.

The extra 6 months may have bummed out some of the fans but I absolutely guarantee that no matter how well the movie is received by the fans, it would have been better with more time.

How much better? We'll never know.

The Rogue One prequel series has been in the works for at least 16 months. Gareth Edwards was in talks for quite a while to become the Executive Producer, Show Runner and writer and was super excited about it. I guess they couldn't come to a final agreement (the last time I saw him it had just happened, so I didn't want to intrude) because Lucasfilm moved on from him and turned to Tony Gilroy, who wrote and directed all of the reshoots, including the awesome 3rd act (Gareth supervised and directed all of the VFX scenes, including the final battle).

The Prequel series will star Diego Luna as Cassian Andor and Alan Tudyk as K2SO. The show begins filming next summer for an early 2021 release on Disney+. It'll be about Cassian's life as a Rebel spy, so we'll see characters like Mon Mothma and Bail Organa, along with others, including Imperials. From what I hear, it'll be eight episodes but I haven't heard anything about run time.

Gilroy hasn't even begun writing the series yet so there are no true plot details or leaks at this point and considering how Lucasfilm kept The Mandalorian's biggest secret under wraps, we may not know anything until its debut.

I'm hoping to see Vader, at least in the final episode. It wouldn't be right without an appearance, IMO.

Jesus fucking Christ. That explains a lot actually. I knew there was some strife but to not have it done until a week before premiere....

The wife and I were watching TV last night when a commercial for the new movie came on. She asked if we were going to see it this weekend and was very surprised when my response was "Fuck no."

Rian Johnson is still being a smarmy fuck whining about pandering to the fans.

I saw the last jedi in theaters and thought it sucked major ass. I will not be seeing the episode 9 in theaters. Disney and KK can go fuck themselves for ruining star wars.

Poor JJ had so many masters to serve it's a wonder this isn't a complete and utter disaster.

Yeah, R1 gave Star Wars a brutal, realistic, and real world insight into what real rebels have to go to when rebelling against the empire. In college (being a history nerd) that was my one qualm with rewatching the OT - and that was that all rebels were magically united in their world view and vision in dismantling the empire. This is never how it goes in real rebellions and with the inevitable power vacuums that follow. To see that discord and brutality in R1 really added something special to the universe, though I understand the critiques about how brutal some of that was to watch, (even Vader’s scene - which made me shriek like a straight up fan girl).

That was actually my hope going into the new trilogy. Dismantling empires is a very messy process - just look at the Soviet Union and what’s happened since. However, it got off to a bad start when the best JJ could muster was to make “A New Hope Awakens”. TLJ, at the very least, tried its best to rectify that - and weirdly, I love Rian’s OG script. In that script, Poe (not Rose) went with Finn to the Casino planet, there was no Holdo, and many more scenes with Luke and Rey. The core of that script was that the Jedi has stagnated and that their unrelenting hold on the galaxy is what paved the way for the Empire - a message that I frankly love. It got muddled somewhere from the higher ups... and it makes you wonder how/why that happened.

Oh there's no question that there was a way to make the skeleton ideas contained in TLJ not suck. My god, the trailer had me more excited for a movie than I'd ever been.

And then, as I've said in a few other threads around here, about 30 minutes in I had the creeping dread that this movie sucked. And then Luke started milking an alien cow and it was just all downhill from there.

But what the trailer did was distill the ideas that COULD'VE made for a great movie into a 2 second clip. And based on that, the movie looked amazing.

Until it actually started...

There’s a good and compelling movie in there but it got lost in the edit bay.

All of the deleted scenes should have been included as well.
