The Lounge>Chiefs All-Decade Team - Safeties
Rain Man 12:44 AM 02-13-2020
With the end of the decade, it's time for us to select our all-decade team for the 2010s. Credit to Direckshun for the idea; I'm just implementing it.

Here are the rules:

1. I'll put up lists of position groups one at a time.

2. Each list will contain guys who had at least one notable stat line in their career. I'll generally put them in descending order of some key stat.

3. The stats will contain ONLY their body of work between 2010 and 2019 for the Chiefs. No pre-2010 stats and no stats for other teams.

4. The number of roster spots will be the same as the number of roster spots on the 2019 Super Bowl roster for the Chiefs.

5. You can use whatever criteria you want to select the team. It can be total stats for the decade, it can be dominance in a shorter period, it can be playmakers who didn't screw up badly, whatever. It's your call. Feel free to use any criteria not listed in your decision. For example, if you know that Terrance Copper was an amazing blocker, you can build that into your decision.

6. In a subsequent poll we will determine which players are the starters on the all-decade team. In the first round, you're just going to fill the 53-man roster.

Our first position group is safeties. FOUR safeties will make the all-decade team. So pick FOUR safeties.

Yeah, I missed the guys who had one interception - Branch, Lucas, Terrell, and Murray. Please add one Int to their totals.

I only remember it so fondly cause it crushed my raider friends heart after he informed me Carr was elite before the game :-)

I'm very much in the berry was overrated camp but he still obviously is one of the top 2 safeties we had in this decade. I voted Abdullah slightly over parker and Sorensen slightly over thornhill. Probably should have parker instead of Sorensen but dirty dan has made some big plays recently that I just cant ignore. A championship team is just gonna have more guys voted for also, just the way it is.

Honestly think this is the only way to go

Same.

Abdullah and Sorensen are close, but Dan has shown up in every playoff game and has been solid otherwise.

what’s with the safety carousel especially with our relative continuity at d coordinator.

can’t they just draft an athletic dude and train him for the damn job? not sure what the explanation is. maybe safety is a position where, when the defense sucks you just kinda say “well he must suck by default then, too” and keep rewashing.

probably a lot of average safeties in that list, and average safeties on teams with good d’s and the good d teams keep their safeties because they want continuity.

it’s a very odd position and extremely hard to evaluate. i think stats mean nothing - look at murray compared to HB. HB made all world plays covering 2-3 guys on a down that doesn’t show in stats.

The Superbowl Champ and leader of that D gets the #1 spot, Eric Berry second for the good years he gave us. Honorable mention to Dirty Dan for filling Thornhills shoes well and balling out in the playoffs.

Good point. I'll amend it to 'overrated.'

Okay, I think it's safe to say that Mathieu, Berry, Sorensen, and Thornhill are on the all-decade team. We'll keep filling out the roster.
