Nzoner's Game Room>Off Season Lets Talk Guns, Part 2
HonestChieffan 11:58 AM 01-23-2011
Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

At a small auction recently the two long guns and one 22 pistol all went crazy high. Is it like that everywhere? I know any auction is a gamble as it only takes 2 bidders to create insanity, but I hope it's not always like that.

I've heard both good and bad about this gun maker.
Taurus. Ruger. KelTec. There are many affordable options that are NOT HiPoint. While I have never shot one, I was at the range with a guy and got to hold it and watch him shoot it. It feels like a toy gun, it jammed (no shit)9 out of 10 shots. I suppose it was accurate, but whatever. You can find used guns or even new from manufacturers like the ones above that are affordable and not shit. HiPoint is shit. JMO.

I also recommend the 9mm...cheap caliber to shoot.

What Munson said. I have never owned one, but I have had two friends that have and both were very unhappy. Both of those guys got rid of them.

This. I owned 2 of the Hi-Point 40s. One before the house fire and one after. Brand new, did not last 100 rounds. Started jamming and the top reciever bored into the bottom. I got rid of it and will not make the same mistake again. Next up will be a Glock 22 40 cal 4th gen.

I decided against the hipoint. I had watched some youtube reviews and one of them said they contacted the manufacturer and they fixed it no charge. But yeah, a gun that jams is a damn near useless gun.

I did end up going with the Taurus PT111 G2. DEGuns had it for $208.99 plus shipping which is a little high at $30. Still a decent deal.

I am a big fan of Ruger. Never had either of mine jam. But they are a little more expensive. I've fired Taurus 9mm in the past and they felt okay, but not as accurate as my Rugers. Still, a decent gun. And yeah, I like 9mm. I did check the pricing of 40 S&W and it was only a couple of cents more per round on Wikiarms.

I had a Ruger SR9 I believe it was called. Couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with it. I figured I was a shitty shot. Tried a glock and shot just fine. Sold that Ruger pretty quick.

My Grandson was looking at different pistols (as his first) and he asked my advice. I asked him "what models do I use" and he said "Sig Sauer, HK, Walther and Springfield". and I said, "Then you have your answer".

Yes, they are more expensive, but I've always believed that "you get what you pay for".

On the other hand, my Wife carries a little Bersa Thunder .380 that she dearly loves. $300 and I promise you, that gun will kill someone just as dead as a $1,000 pistol.

I've heard both good and bad about this gun maker.

A couple of things with this: IF the gun is going to be more of a 'toy' than an all purpose gun, then fine. BUT, the 40 SW is not the funnest round to shoot nor is the most affordable. I'd recommend going with a 9mm regardless of what you get. Personally, I owned a Hi-point and had NO issues with it and I know of others who have had good luck as well, but at the end of the day I didn't trust it. That being said, when I bought my daughter her first gun...I went with a Glock. No messing around. IF the situation arises where she HAS to shoot it at a bad guy it needs to be as close to 100% reliable as possible...Hi-point never gave me the feeling of reliability. My 2 cents.

Went out and shot my M1 Garand. Shot 48 rounds out of it with no issues. Sights needed adjusted but it was close enough. I love the ping sound when the clip ejected. My favorite gun I own.

Good choice. I've had a Taurus 24\7 compact in .45 for a couple of years now, great starter gun, and similar to the pt111.

Man, what happened to 7.62x54R? The lowest price is $0.37 / round. Last time I got it in bulk it was like $0.19.
