Saccopoo Memorial Draft Forum>The Jones contract.

Is genius.

The Chiefs could have put Chris Jones on the franchise tag this year, tagged him next year, then let him walk into free agency.

Instead, they signed him to a four year contract.

That four year contract costs almost exactly the same as tagging Jones two straight years, then gives the team the easiest possible out after that -- ZERO dead money in 2022. ZERO dead money in 2023.

That makes Jones by far the most tradeable asset the team has had since Jared Allen, if the Chiefs ever opt for that. It also gives the Chiefs some leverage if they go back to the table in 2023 to extend him.

And Jones has exactly zero $$$ in signing bonus.

Veach read this as inhumanly well as you could have. Chris Jones wanted $20m/year. That was his first and only concern.

So Veach and the Chiefs gave it to him, completely on their terms. Wow.

Thats incredible.

I think it helps that Veach is young. I can't see Carl, Fat Scott, or even Dorsey being able to pull this off. All it requires is listening to what the client wants and delivering it.

Very smart deal.

Wow. People thought that Pat could have done better but Chris set himself up to get hosed in the long run. This is all about great for the Chiefs. I bet he is gone after 2 years when Pat's contract starts to escalate. Wonder what kind of haul we can get for him after a couple more years of top flight play. :-)

I openly championed trading him but it is a good deal for both sides. Good for them both. Hopefully, he will continue being a motivated player and not drop off plus put in extra work in the run game and maintaining gap discipline.

and that is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Why in the world would want to TRADE him? He is an incredible player that wants to be here. Let's see how he plays over the next several years then reassess.

I never understood all the talk about trading Stone Cold Jones- he was amazing in the SB.

He gets paid proving the contrarians wrong and its still- what can we get for trading Jones.

Answer is- Nothing that would be greater than the loss of his talents.

Pretty sure his 2022 salary becomes fully guaranteed before the 2021 season. So it's effectively a 3 year deal.
