Nzoner's Game Room>Air conditioner question
Mecca 07:40 AM 04-18-2019
So this house I live in it has a really large vaulted ceiling through the living room which runs right through the middle of the house. Each side of the house isn't vaulted. On one side of that vault there is a loft room that sits over the top of the bedrooms basically.

In the summer even with central AC it gets hot as balls up there and the living room in general is by far the warmest room of the house.

Thinking about putting either a portable AC or a window unit in there to cool off that room and help the living room at least a bit.

Anyone have this experience or any advice, I'd appreciate it.

Some people will tell you that it cost "so much more" to run the fan all the time. Which is not true. It will cost a little more but not but a few dollars. Did you know that every time a motor starts it pulls 4.5 times more amps to start the motor than it does to run the motor? The industry standard is that a unit will have an average cycle time of 12 to 15 minutes.

Does you A/C run non stop during summer?
Depends on how hot it is, last year when we had that month where it was 95+ everyday, from about 2-7 it ran pretty constantly. If it stays closer to 90 and less that doesn't happen.

Also as far as window units go...is there any preferred brand?

Got a fridgidaire 10000btu for my moms apt last summer to replace her older kenmore 5000btu. New one is 350 ish but got an open box from Best Buy eBay warehouse out of Michigan I think. Anyway, open box was 245 free shipping. Everything was there, instructions, no hardware or warranty papers missing. Couldn’t even tell box was open. This one has the remote so for yours if you just go with the dial knobs for on/off and speed you will save a few bucks and possibly go with more btu by saving on the manual controls instead of electronic.

Link above is just an example of different size fridgidaire open box options but local pickup only in California. Didn’t even check the seller. But try Best Buy open box options on eBay. Saved her 100$ and no issues with the unit. So I’m thi case I went with a known brand rather than a China made one that the brand name I never heard of from Walmart or Home Depot for the same price range. I think Home Depot carries GE brand. Go to manufacture website and get measurements of the unit and I would get one with as many btu as possible that fits in your price range and window. Lots of odd brands I never heard of out there

If your unit is running a lot then yeah you are going to have to add some cooling from another route. I would want to go with a Mini Split. No brand preference on window units. Frigidaire, Kenmore, LG are all common and pretty good.
Normal sizing is 6 to 8,000 btu is for a small bedroom. You will probably want a 10,000 to 12,000 btu minimum.

I wanted to add I just had my roof done and I do have these.
