Nzoner's Game Room>Eric Berry Released!
T-post Tom 02:15 PM 03-13-2019
It's done. The spirit is free. (Don't go towards the light.)

The #Chiefs have released S Eric Berry. End of an era in KC.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 13, 2019

The Chiefs have released Berry with a post-June 1 designation, a source tells me. Means the Chiefs will save around $9.5m on the cap this year and $5.5m next year.

At the time I was as excited to draft Berry as Id ever been for a draft pick. He more than lived up to my expectations.

His deal with cancer and mutiple season ending injuries was heartbreaking. Each time he came back and played amazing... Untill he couldnt anymore. It seems it was just one too many and the guy wasnt willing to shelve himself for another year after all his bad luck. He tried to play through it and that was a big mistake.

I will never forget the way he bounced back from cancer. He was an inspiration. Good luck to you Eric.

Despite all that, the most excited I've ever been for a draft pick is Patrick Mahomes. We need players who are available and earn their contracts to help him win us a superbowl. Cant carry a bunch of underperforming players with bloated contracts. Its a business and one dictated by superbowls. Next man up - lets go win one!

Weird. But I think the Chiefs made the right call. They basically had to roll the same set of dice that they rolled last year had he stayed.
I have not read anywhere else he said "it would heal on its own". He said Eric Berry doesn't require surgery.

Those are actually two different things, as I tried to explain to LilChiefyBugger.

The old Chiefs would have blindly supported such nonsense in the name of player relations. I'm SO glad that shit is over.

I did. It's the only place I've seen someone say the doctor told him it would heal on its own.

Every other report says the doctor told him he doesn't need surgery.

Which of course aren't the same thing.

That's what I remember. He came back to KC with a "no surgery needed" verdict, but nothing else regarding what, if anything, could be done to make the situation better.

I wonder how long it would take to heal itself, and what kind or levels of stress you could place on yourself while trying to let the body do its work? It must be a long process if a year couldn't get it done.

Yeah, I assume Nate got some inside info. He typically gets some good stuff.

It makes sense that the doctor would say that because otherwise surgery would seem like the better option. I just don’t know how exactly it would heal itself. Not saying it can’t—but I hadn’t heard of that possibility yet. But this guy is a foot specialist, he should know these things. Yet the Chiefs clearly weren’t going to take the chance. I think they’re right not to.

Unless the surgery won't do anything. If you have an inoperable tumor, they'll tell you that you don't need surgery. It doesn't mean it's just going to go away.

The condition or the bone spur wont ever heal itself, the discomfort and pain might.

Its like a bulging disc. Some people can have them and learn through therapy, strengthening and lifestyle changes to mitigate the pain. Others cant. Then some people will have had them and never been bothered by it.

It just sucks that this guy had been a warrior. Beats cancer...taken out by a "thingee" on his frickin' foot.

Ah well. Good luck Eric. At least you and yours are taken care of financially. I mean WELL taken care of.

Chiefs did the right thing. Can’t afford to gamble another lost season on him. I’d rather an average player that’s available than a superstar who’s never available.

I have a feeling the heal itself thing is if he doesn’t work out like a maniac, rests, and doesn’t play a professional sport it will be tolerable.. Training camp, practices, and games are not part of the healing process...

That's like pilots who don't fly not being as affected by the fear of flying... :-)
