Saccopoo Memorial Draft Forum>Mock (4/25)

My best guess as to how the Chiefs actually draft in a couple days.

Assumptions:

1. GM John Dorsey and HC Andy Reid are extended for four years. Alex Smith is kept on for at least another year.

2. The Chiefs decline OLB Dee Ford's fifth year contract option.

3. The Chiefs extend CB Terrance Mitchell over the course of the 2017 season.

3. The Chiefs sign:

1.27. OLB Takkarist McKinley, UCLA

Yeah. Not what I want the Chiefs to do. But in my opinion, seems the most likely.

I want them to trade up for Watson, but that's not Dorsey's game, is it? He builds for the long-term, to make the team as good as he can across the board for as long as he can. The best way to do that is to not trade away a ton of picks in a talent-rich draft. I also want him to select Mahomes if they stay put, but Mahomes isn't a great fit for the Andy Reid system, and as much as I like him, the Red Raider offensive system does spook me some.

There are some pretty good talents across the board here, but unfortunately they're not at DL or ILB, where the Chiefs could use the most help. Instead, they'll settle for a really good OLB in McKinley. The Chiefs are cash-strapped heading into 2018 and Ford hasn't given us a consistently good passrush. He's upgraded from non-factor to bursts of production. Hopefully he can translate that into more consistency. McKinley is the insurance if he doesn't. (I predict McKinley is our starting LOLB in 2018.)

2.59. QB Nathan Peterman, Pittsburgh

The more and more I watch this guy, the more I think the Chiefs love this guy. He seems to fit the Alex Smith mold, though he is more comfortable pushing the ball downfield. This is a minor reach for Peterman, who I think is more of a 3rd round talent, but the Chiefs need a QB desperately to groom and this doesn't preclude them from going early again on a QB in 2018 if they want.

3.97. NT Jaleel Johnson, Iowa

Chiefs need to add more beef up front. Right now they have solid depth options at both DE positions -- Nunez-Roches and Jenkins have both proven themselves in limited starting time. But they still have no depth behind Logan at NT, after losing their best two NTs from 2016, in Howard and Poe.

3.104. ILB Anthony Walker Jr., Northwestern

Gotta build that front seven, folks.

I like Walker as a prospect a lot more than I like his tape. He sports very good potential in pass coverage and in run support, though his tape has lapses all over the place in both. I think he has outstanding instincts, and seems to have plus-athleticism for the position. I think where he lacks is his fundamentals, and this coaching staff can make strides on that front with him.

4.132. DE Eddie Vanderdoes, UCLA

This seems like a Dorsey player -- tons and tons and tons of athleticism. It is ridiculous, the tools this guy has to work with. With Britt Reid coaching up DL, there's no reason why they can't nab a potential starting DL in the midrounds.

5.170. TE George Kittle, Iowa

The Chiefs love TEs that can catch the ball in the flat, turn the corner and burst upfield. The Chiefs also need to be deeper at the TE position than they are -- as often as they play 3TEs, they need to be at least four deep.

5.180. RB De'Angelo Henderson, Coastal Carolina

You guys gotta get a load of this dude, if you haven't already. This is an extremely slippery running back who boasts great short-distance burst and defenders never seem to land a clean hit on. I think he could be an outstanding receiver out of the backfield, and provide a great 10 snaps a game in relief. I really want to see what this coaching staff can get out of this guy.

6.216. RB Joe Williams, Utah

I really loved what this guy brought as a player since the Combine. He looked outstanding in the drills which brought me to his tape. Williams is such a smart, reliable playmaker that I think it makes sense for the Chiefs to double-dip here and fatten up their RB stable a bit.

6.218. ILB Dylan Cole, Missouri State

Sticking with the local kid -- I really do think he could be an interesting reserve option going forward. He clearly has an uphill battle to make the roster, however.

7.245. OT Taylor Gadbois, Southeastern Louisiana

Dorsey almost always picks an obscure dude here, so I'll just select someone I like that I don't think will get drafted. Gadbois would certainly be a practice squad candidate.

My last 2015 mock was pretty freaking accurate. I went CB in the first (Kevin Johnson instead of Marcus Peters), C in the 2nd (I don't remember who instead of Mitch Morse), even explicitly selected Conley in the 3rd and O'Shaughnessy late in the draft.

I mocked a ton in 2016 but I didn't follow the draft too intently that year. I didn't even have an "official endorsement" -- which, you know, who gives a shit, but it's just an indication that I was checked out last draft season.

I'm off a ton as much as any fan is, though. By no means do I think I'm Nostradamus, but I do think I have a little idea as to what Dorsey/Reid are looking for after following them in the draft way too intently since 2013...

Honestly, the majority of my anger is directed at Peterman in the 2nd.

If that were to happen, I wouldn't trust Reid or Dorsey anymore when it comes to QBs and this team. They'd be in the same fucking boat as Carl and Fat Scott.

I sat by when they said Alex was the best thing for the team. I sat by as THEY sat on him and treated him like a real franchise QB, passing on Derek Carr and admitting later that they liked him a lot but felt tied to Alex fucking Smith. And now that they want to move beyond him, the best they can do is Peterman in the 2nd? To me, that screams that they were never serious about life after Alex at all.

We were told not to hamstring the new regime with the mistakes of the past. Carl's faults aren't the fault of Dorsey and Reid, and those guys need time. That's what we were told.

Well, it's now the 5th draft of theirs. Now the mistakes of the past are directly the responsibility of the new regime if they keep up this fucking garbage.

Nate Peterman isn't a franchise QB or even a consolation prize QB. He's a goddamn INSULT.

While I think this is an excellent post, allow me to play a little devil's advocate by taking Dorsey/Reid's hypothetical position here:

Drafting a QB in the first hamstrings you to that QB because it's a five year contract. Therefore, you should only hamstring yourself to the QB that fits what you want in a QB. All these guys have major warts in their game, and outside Tribusky, I don't think any of the top four guys fit Reid's offense like a glove.

I think Peterman does. I know you hate the guy, but Reid likes QBs that don't beat their own team. Peterman is a smart QB that is very careful with the ball and will even push the ball downfield more than Smith. In addition to that, he's got really good composure in the pocket and can actually convert 3rd and longs, so they're not automatically lost downs like they are with Smith under center.

Plus, taking Peterman in the 2nd means you only have him for 4 years, and you have more flexibility to take a QB you love in the 1st or 2nd in 2018 if you so desire.

Peterman in the 2nd is a reach. I believe the Chiefs wanting a QB is smoke to insure 1 of the few dlinemen they like slides to them. Bailey and Logan are free agents after year the depth is a little thin. I don't believe RNR is equipped to stop the run, Jenkins is a scrub, etc.

If you take Peterman before the 4th, the problem isn't that you reached, its that you're goddamn retarded.

Peterman is a poor man's Smith. His absolute peak is Alex Smith.

I'd rather have Kaaya or Kelly. Or Dobbs.

I'd rather have Jerod Evans.

Tyson Jackson, Dexter Mccluster and Javier Arenas would piss me off less than Nate Peterman in the second.

Just a terrible, terrible idea.

Peterman on Gruden's QB camp. Watching the actual episode now.

The first thing this guy does is talk about how much he idolizes Tebow. Yes, I'm dead serious. I know it's for Jesus reasons, but still. There are plenty of successful team leader QBs that have come and gone who are also religious. Philip Rivers. Kurt Warner. Pick one of those guys, you bat-eared doofus.

The next thing he goes on about? Trick shot videos. He likes doing trick shots.

Alex Tanney (remember him?) actually looked impressive in those trick shots. And he was a nifty little gimmick we had to care about in the midst of a hopeless cause. This dude isn't doing anything all that impressive that most QBs couldn't pull off with a couple of takes, AND he would cost a 2nd round fucking pick.

I think I hate this asshole. Legitimately. Irrationally, yes. But I think I hate him. I haven't hated a QB coming out of the draft like this since Brock Osweiler.

Right there with you.

I've come to loathe Nate Peterman and everything he represents. He is mediocrity personified. He's worshiping at the altar of a raised floor.

He's the friend that you bring out on a double when you think you might actually like the girl you're bringing for yourself.

He's the basketball coach that gets hired at a football school.

He's just this forgettable blob that you hope fades into the background that people are vaguely comfortable with but ultimately don't really think about at all.

I'd rather take Joe Mixon in the second, Gareon Conley in the 3rd and Caleb Brantley in the 4th. Then sign Johnny Manziel as a free agent.

It's not just Peterman; as far as non-descript, ultimately irrelevant career backups with marginal upside who could lead bad teams to 6 win seasons go, you could do worse. Hell, he may even make himself into a poor man's Brian Hoyer some day.

But drafting Peterman is like hiring Kim Anderson - it's an open acknowledgement that you just don't give a fuck.

That's because I'm brilliant.

I'll thrive in whatever role I choose.

The other miserable twats are elated to have me on their side these days.
