Billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein was arrested for allegedly sex trafficking dozens of minors in New York and Florida between 2002 and 2005, and will appear in court in New York on Monday, according to three law enforcement sources. The arrest, by the FBI-NYPD Crimes Against Children Task Force, comes about 12 years after the 66-year-old financier essentially got a slap on the wrist for allegedly molesting dozens of underage girls in Florida.

For more than a decade, Epstein’s alleged abuse of minors has been the subject of lawsuits brought by victims, investigations by local and federal authorities, and exposés in the press. But despite the attention cast on his alleged sex crimes, the hedge-funder has managed to avoid any meaningful jail time, let alone federal charges.

The new indictment—which, according to two sources, will be unsealed Monday in Manhattan federal court—will reportedly allege that Epstein sexually exploited dozens of underage girls in a now-familiar scheme: paying them cash for "massages" and then molesting or sexually abusing them in his Upper East Side mansion or his palatial residence in Palm Beach. Epstein will be charged with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors—which could put him away for a maximum of 45 years. The case is being handled by the Public Corruption Unit of the Southern District of New York, with assistance from the district's human-trafficking officials and the FBI.

Several of the billionaire's employees and associates allegedly recruited the girls for Epstein's abuse, and some victims eventually became recruiters themselves, according to law enforcement. The girls were as young as 14, and Epstein knew they were underage, according to details of the arrest and indictment shared by two officials.

Epstein's attorney Martin Weinberg declined to comment when reached by The Daily Beast on Saturday night. The SDNY also declined to comment.

“It’s been a long time coming—it’s been too long coming,” said attorney David Boies, who represents Epstein accusers Virginia Roberts Giuffre and Sarah Ransome. “It is an important step towards getting justice for the many victims of Mr. Epstein’s sex trafficking enterprise.

“We hope that prosecutors will not stop with Mr. Epstein because there were many other people who participated with him and made the sex trafficking possible," he told The Daily Beast.

In an era where #MeToo has toppled powerful men, Epstein’s name was largely absent from the national conversation, until the Miami Herald published a three-part series on how his wealth, power and influence shielded him from federal prosecution. For years, The Daily Beast has reported on Epstein’s alleged abuse, and his easy jail sentence and soft treatment by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which ultimately scrapped a 53-page indictment against Epstein. An earlier version of Epstein’s plea deal included a 10-year federal sentence—before his star-studded lawyers threatened to go to trial in a case prosecutors feared was unwinnable, in part because Epstein’s team dredged up dirt on the victims, including social media posts indicating drug use.

Meanwhile, the financier flitted among his homes in Palm Beach, New York City, and the Virgin Islands, as well as his secluded Zorro Ranch in Stanley, New Mexico, transporting young women on his private jet to facilitate the sexual abuse that’s gone unchecked by authorities, his alleged victims say.

In an announcement planned for Monday the FBI is expected to provide a number for other victims to contact the SDNY.

Chelsea Clinton echoed her ex-president father in denying an association with Jeffrey Epstein and reports that she was a close friend of Ghislaine Maxwell, the wealthy financier’s former girlfriend -- who settled at least two lawsuits over sex-related allegations.

Epstein, 66, was arrested July 6 on sex trafficking charges. He pleaded not guilty to accusations he ran a trafficking operation involving teens.

He allegedly created and maintained a "vast network" and operation from 2002 "up to and including" 2005, enabling him to "sexually exploit and abuse dozens of underage girls" in addition to paying victims to recruit other girls.

Since his arrest, many prominent figures have come forward to deny their association with Epstein, most notably former President Bill Clinton, who said he “knows nothing” about the allegations and took just a few trips on Epstein’s airplane.

But now the former first daughter also has issued a statement amid a Politico report that Maxwell, who was not charged but reportedly settled two lawsuits filed by women who claimed she participated in the alleged sex trafficking, has been close to the Clinton family.

Maxwell reportedly became friends with Chelsea Clinton, vacationing together on a yacht in 2009 and attending Chelsea’s wedding to Marc Mezvinsky in 2010.

“Ghislaine was the contact between Epstein and Clinton,” a person familiar with the relationship told the outlet. “She ended up being close to the family because she and Chelsea ended up becoming close.”

The spokesperson for Chelsea Clinton and her husband told Politico that the couple wasn’t aware of Maxwell’s alleged involvement in Epstein’s sex trafficking ring.

“It wasn’t until 2015 that Chelsea and (her husband) Marc became aware of the horrific allegations against Ghislaine Maxwell and hope that all the victims find justice,” the spokesperson said.

“Chelsea and Marc were friendly with her because of her relationship with a dear friend of theirs. When that relationship ended, Chelsea and Marc’s friendship with her ended as well.”

Bill Clinton’s spokesman issued a similar statement after Epstein’s arrest, claiming he “knows nothing” about the “terrible crimes” allegedly committed by Epstein.

"In 2002 and 2003, President Clinton took a total of four trips on Jeffrey Epstein’s airplane: one to Europe, one to Asia, and two to Africa, which included stops in connection with the work of the Clinton Foundation," the statement said.

"Staff, supporters of the foundation, and his Secret Service detail traveled on every leg of every trip. He had one meeting with Epstein in his Harlem office in 2002, and around the same time made one brief visit to Epstein’s New York apartment with a staff member and his security detail. He’s not spoken to Epstein in well over a decade, and he has never been to Little St. James Island, Epstein’s ranch in New Mexico, or his residence in Florida.”

Topline: Federal prosecutors subpoenaed Jeffrey Epstein’s personal pilots—who flew Epstein’s celebrity friends around the world—in the hopes they can corroborate the accounts of women who allege Epstein transported them on private planes to facilitate their sexual abuse.
  • Prosecutors might be able to use the pilots’ testimonies to confirm the accounts of Epstein’s accusers, according to the Wall Street Journal. The 66-year-old former financier is charged with two counts of sex trafficking and sex conspiracy, and allegedy ran a sex ring of dozens of underage girls.
  • Multiple women have filed civil lawsuits against Epstein that mentioned the pilots. None of the pilots, however, were named as defendants.
  • From around 1998 to 2002, the women said, Epstein allegedly conspired with his pilots and associates to make sure he avoided law enforcement.
  • Some of Epstein’s flight logs became public through the civil lawsuits. And some of his accusers’ names appear in the flight logs, which the women said helped confirm their allegations of being sexually abused by Epstein.
  • Neither Epstein’s legal team nor the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office commented on the pilots’ subpoenas. It’s unclear how many pilots were subpoenaed, if they will cooperate with federal prosecutors or what information they will provide.

One of Epstein’s planes was nicknamed the “Lolita Express” for its alleged transport of underage girls for the former financier and his friends to sexually abuse. In 2015, Gawker published Epstein’s “little black book,” which contained the names of hundreds of people, dozens of whom were wealthy and famous people connected to him. Many of the people listed in the little black book flew on Epstein’s private planes, including Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew and Alan Dershowitz.

Key background: Epstein has been under scrutiny since a 2007 federal sex crimes indictment in Florida that resulted in a lenient plea deal. The agreement granted him and his anonymous coconspirators immunity and sealed all documents. (A federal judge issued an order in July to unseal documents associated with the case, which could implicate other rich and powerful people.) The Miami Herald’s “Perversion of Justice” investigative series detailed how a federal prosecutor, Alexander Acosta, helped broker—and then seal—the plea deal. Epstein served 13 months in a county jail with 12 hours of work release, six days a week, after conviction on a Florida state prostitution charge. He also registered as a sex offender both in Florida and New York. After his release from county jail, Epstein went free until his July 6 arrest at New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport, after which he was charged with sex trafficking and sex conspiracy. He pleaded not guilty and was denied bail.
