Nzoner's Game Room>Four major art projects for new KCI terminal revealed
neech 10:50 PM 04-09-2021
The first of four major art projects for the new single terminal airport at KCI have been revealed.

More than 1,000 artists from around the world submitted inquiries after Kansas City announced an international search for artists.
The city said the four works of art were chosen because they either reflected the wonder of travel or Kansas City history.

The budget for artwork at KCI’s new terminal is $5.65 million. Kansas City’s single-terminal airport is expected to open on budget and on time in early 2023.

“The fact that we’ve been through a pandemic over the last year and yet this project remains on time, on schedule, and on budget is a testament to the good work of the team,” said Justin Meyer with the KC Aviation Department.

You can see the renderings of the art projects in the gallery below.

Entitled "Molten Swing"

Entitled "The Air up There"

Entitled "Ornithology"

Entitled "Fountain of Resonance"

"Molten Swing" looks kind of like a mosaic dog or cat to me, it might look cool though but not sure what to make of it at this point.

"The Air up There" simply looks like some lights on the ceiling, again it might look better when you're actually there I hope.

"Ornithology" reminds me of those attacking creatures in the Pitch Black movie. You just knew one of the artwork they chose would have a WTF moment and this is it.

"Fountain of Resonance" I approve of this one.
:-)

Thoughts?

You know you have a bullshit configuration when an airport that has very light air traffic and ups dhl usps and fed ex are some of the top flights in and out of MCI is causing traffic ball up's. But that's the architect they chose with their similar greenhouse footprint. They have traffic snarls all over the world with that design. If you had to do it should have gone with Burns and Mac the locals who live in and care about this city.

The design is fine.

The hillbillys in our city just need to be taught how to enter and exit a modern airport and be reminded it is not a parking lot at a big box shopping store.

Oh bullshit the old airport was a breeze and your so-called hillbillys negotiated it fine. That new shit is a clusterfuck of a design. That same footprint by those jokers has the same problem in big cities with all the suave and debonair folks you love so much.

Or you should design an airport that actually works for the hillbillies instead of thinking you can get a smooth traffic flow by forcing a square peg into a round hole?

I have not been there yet but I was told by a valedictorian that there is no signage and there is confusion on where the cell lot is and then the arrivals area is. He even likes soccer and everything.

Simplicity is great when flying domestic across the USA. Sure MCI would have been awful to have a delay/layover in, and near the end it probably needed to be put out of its misery. But it was a fine home base for as long as I've been flying.

That's kind of the point though... a lot of people in KC seriously hate downtown and the Plaza, because of the one way streets, narrower streets, etc. And the old KCI was just a microcosm of KC's sprawl that people love if they live there.

And I haven't been there yet, but have read a few times the signage sucks. Hopefully it's implemented close to say Sky Harbor, that seems to have a similar layout, far more traffic, and is easy to drop off/pick up and go..... as opposed to say San Diego, which is a clusterfuck because no one seems to know they don't have to pick up everyone in a 5x5' space at the beginning of the walkway.

They'll get it figured out...
From our friend Dana Wright

The issue is 100% semantics. KC is used to "going to the airport" LITERALLY GOING TO @Fly_KansasCity -'floating' out front. NO MORE. YOU GO TO THE CELL LOT. WAIT. Once your people have their BAGS, you leave the cell lot and GO to the airport. Stop PARKING out front omg. pic.twitter.com/hdd7u3c137

In this thread.

People dying on the hill of defending people who can’t navigate a simple drop off system.

Best practices do not cease to be best practices just because people from Kansas City are scared of change.

Sorry we upgraded your shitbox. Can’t wait for the demolition of the old one. You’re welcome.

I never have to do pick ups or drop offs anywhere besides MCI so I have no idea how other places are but no doubt it was easy at the old airport so I hope it’s the same with the new one.

Regarding the actual inside it looks so much better obviously but I’m guessing it functions way better as well. There’s nothing worst than when you got to the old terminal having to force yourself to go to the bathroom before security because you know once you get through it there is like two men’s toilets for basically everyone.

I watched some video that said the reason the bathroom and food situation is so bad after going through security because shortly after it was built regulations changed and the walls separating security had to be quickly put up also making for little to no space for food options and very few bathrooms. And that makes sense because of you can picture the terminals without those walls separating the secure gates area from the ticketing, walkways, etc. then you can see how there actually would have been space and amenities while you wait to leave.
