Media Center>Anyone else remember Over the Edge?

That movie messed with my head as a kid.

Anyway, I just realized the that the Ooh Ooh Child (a song that never fails to give me goosebumps) scene in Boys in the Hood:

Is very likely an homage to a similar scene in Over the Edge:

I was at Over the Edge when Owen Hart fell to his death.

So was I dude!

I'm in a green soccer jersey right along the entrance. You can see me if you watch the PPV (I was in 7th grade then). They wheeled Owen down the aisle right in front of us.

Crazy night wasn't it?

I remember it, it made a big impression on me as a kid... I’d never seen kids portrayed that way before

I remember it. Early Matt Dillon right?

I think it was a fairly controversial movie for it’s time.

Probably tame and dated now. Is it streaming on anything?

Cool article I found about the movie: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/w...edge-134-v16n9

I didn't realize Matt Dillon was discovered for this movie.

I think this movie resonated so much with me as a kid is because we were doing all the same shit in Independence, and then Blue Springs. My friend was smoking weed in like 3rd grade. I remember kids selling joints on the bus in elementary school. We’d play with guns, break into houses, watch reel to reel porn movies. Latchkey kids in suburban wastelands with no neighborhood to look out for them = disaster.

I always said if I had a kid I'd tell them no way you're coming home in the afternoon to get high and play video games (or worse). You need to find something you like to do after school.

Me too. What a waste to go over a stupid, unnecessary stunt to put over a jobber gimmick.

I have this on my phone right now. I have watched it a couple of times recently. It is still pretty shocking considering the amount of supervision that is typical for kids these days. I bought it from amazon. I'm guessing they rent it too.

Great movie. Remember watching it on Showtime when we first got cable. My older brothers and sisters ran the streets of KCK like that. Smoking. Drinking. Fighting. And other general mischief.

Jonathan Kaplan went on to direct some pretty big films in the 80's. Heart Like a Wheel, The Accused and a few others.

I read a retrospective on this in the past year [not the Vice one above, some other similar article].

First I'd ever heard of it anywhere. Completely eluded my existence.

Kind of weird that it looks 'prescient' in some ways, yet also looks completely alien to my quite similar experience from the time.

Among the best youth "alienation" movies, watch it whenever I see it's on.

The only movie that gave me the heeby jeebies as a kid was The Exorcist and only TV show was Trilogy of Terror staring Karen Black and the scariest little fucking 6" mean looking voodoo doll that came alive when she came back from her vacation.
