Is going 9-7 instead of 6-10 really worth $17M and a 2nd round draft pick?
If you're the Browns, it very well may be.

The Browns went 7-9 in 2014 with Hoyer at QB. You really think that Smith couldn't get them better than that?

And yeah....9-7 is a lot better than 0-16 or 1-15.

Exactly.
Plus, cap hit is not a concern for the 4 teams of interest (Clev, NYJ, Buff and AZ). Those teams aren't even close to the minimum salary cap for 2018. $17 wouldn't even get Clev and NYJ to the min.

They're sitting at the #5 pick... all this Broncos' created buzz around Mayfield is (hopefully) all about driving up interest in trading partners.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller relays that multiple evaluators he's spoken with do not care if Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield plays in Saturday's Senior Bowl.
"We've seen him play in 25 games the last two seasons, what's an all-star game going to change?" one NFL head coach asked Miller hypothetically. The analyst passes along that the general vibe he got from his contacts was that they were simply pleased with the fact that Mayfield came to the Senior Bowl at all. We're in complete agreement, here. By all accounts, the 6-foot-2, 216-pounder has performed well on the whole in Mobile, both on the field and in terms of his composure in what's always something of an odd setting. One little Mayfield gem from the week -- he turned down an interview with the Chicago Bears, who drafted Mitch Trubisky last spring, essentially asking the team why they were even bothering.

That's the way I see it too, but I PRAY that Elway actually drafts him at # 5. :-)

Klemko provided some context to your #FakeNews...

Then the truth comes out.

“You know I’ve got to get you for 15 minutes, Baker,” the scout tells him.

“Yeah, we’ll see. I’ve got a bunch more meetings tonight,” Mayfield replies.

It goes on like that, with the scout pressing on and Mayfield apologetically leaning away, reluctant to commit to a 15-minute interview with a scout whose team drafted a quarterback second overall just nine months ago. Then something clicks in Mayfield’s brain, like the latch catching on a closing door.

“You guys just drafted Mitchell Trubisky,” Mayfield says, “so what do you want with me?”

Moments later, Mayfield meets some folks he can’t say no to, stopping for five minutes to sign autographs for a mom and her kids despite their Alabama jerseys. “You just made their year,” she says, hugging him. “Just don't show the old guys out in the parking lot,” he quips.

Baker Mayfield knows what he’s here for, and it’s not so scouts with teams who will never draft him can check off a box and report to their general managers they did the due diligence on arguably the most polarizing player in the draft.

Without context it makes Mayfield look like an arrogant douche.

No it doesn’t. It makes him look like he knows what he’s talking about. In both your version and Pest’s.
To teams he’s a piece of meat they want to use to win and make money. He doesn’t have to pretend any different.

He already did that long before the Senior Bowl.

Mayfield IS a douche. His many antics prior to that have proved that. Not sure why you feel the need to accuse someone of framing a narrative that has already been proven.

Based on what I'm reading in this thread, the Broncos should trade up to be sure they get that Mayfield fellow.
