Nzoner's Game Room>The Fishing Thread
Easy 6 07:58 PM 02-19-2010
Searched around & only found the video fishing & BassMasters threads, i know their are plenty of outdoorsman here, so i figured it'd be cool to draw upon the Planets vast experience in all things fishing.

I only use spincast reels & fish mostly large/smallmouth bass & cats. My choice of reels is quite the source of derision from many people i know 'duffer gear', but i haul in my share of 6 pound bass & 10-20 pound cats on that gear no problem. With a little know-how you can use just about any technique you want to on 'duffer gear'.

Berkley Powerbaits are a big part of my trick bag, the difference between those & regular stuff is night & day. My best action last summer came on Mister Twister scented white curly tail grubs, on one day fishing from shore to a bridge pier, i caught smallies, bigmouths, perch & even 1 carp believe it or not... great day. But my bread & butter is a texas rigged Berkley worm, it'll wiggle through any kind of cover without getting hung up.

With cats i strictly bottom fish, no bobber & bait is just as basic... but its always in 2's to give'em a real treat... a shrimp/with a nightcrawler, liver/chunk of cheese etc. Cats are mostly for night sport to me, time to kick back a lil...

So thats me style, how do the rest of you guys get your fish on? What do you fish for, what do you use? IIRC Missouri's trout season just kicked off, anyone getting anything?

This is one of my two hoop nets... I’m gonna knock’em down with this!!! I have the luxury of living a couple miles from the Mississippi as well as having a cabin there. Pretty sweet.

Yeah this little hot spot we found at a drainage ditch has an abundance of the following fish: channel cats/blue cats...nothing less than 15-20 lbs, bass 4-7 lbs, walleye, musky and THOUSANDS of stripers that are the size of my hand! :-). It’s been like that for 10 years now... and no exaggeration... the fish there are huge for whatever reason...every one of them except the stripers!!! It’s a little hot spot located between the Mississippi and the fourth pumping station. It’s unreal. Weather hasn’t cooperated for that spot yet this year, but you can see them... they are still there... they are just a bit messed up from the weather.

Hit hard as hell and felt like a snag when I reeled him in. Got him about 3 inches below the surface at a drainage ditch... right in front of the tunnel.

Caught him and like a 2-3 lb freshwater drum/perch that didn’t hit like a perch... hit like a bass...didn’t fiddle. Both with the turquoise green beetle bait. :-)

There will be several more hotspots when I start stocking these ponds with what I catch in my hoop net. A lot of farmers requesting huge channel cats and flatheads for their ponds. My deal with them is that I will stock it for free as long as I’m allowed to fish there.

What did you get him with? I will be honest, I have never caught a bass that big, Ohio is not known for lunkers like that, I've caught some 3-4lbers, but that right there, is a big fish. I used to be huge into fishing, but its harder with kids. Last weekend I went to a pond, caught a couple decent babies around 14-16 inches, but when you have 5 kids you are trying to corral, its a bit difficult to fish lol. Always helping cast, or bait, or reel, or untangle, or pick someone up out of the mud. Last week was pretty hilarious, I told one of my 3 year olds, don't run through that muddy patch, you will slip and fall in the pond, not 5 minutes later LOL.

I caught it with this lure right here:

That lure, without question, has been the most effective for me this year. I’ve caught probably 75% of the bass with that one... and I’ve tried hundreds of lures this year. That one is “Old Reliable” status right now. Coming in a distant 2nd is the blue and black Chatterbait (and I have like 8 colors for Chatterbaits...for whatever reason, the blue and black):

My life situation recently has allowed me to get back in touch with some of the things I was allowed to do 10 years ago.

I know EXACTLY what you mean about the kids.
:-) And they are so antsy and impatient that the bobbers don’t stay out there long enough. Haha my girls are 2, 7 and 8. The older two also tend to get bored and whiney if we aren’t catching anything.
