They still have Edman and whether the fans like it or not, Carpenter is going to get his share of playing time.

Thats a yikes from me. Lose defense and OBP with Edman and there's not much more to be said about Carpenter. Just doesn't make sense to go the cheap route and then make a trade for a guy like Arenado. Outside of Arenado and Goldy your entire projected lineup sucks ass when it comes to getting on base.

I'm assuming like Marco Polo said, that the Cardinals are probably assuming that baseball economics are going to keep Nolan from opting out.

Next year Gorman and Libatore will arrive. They seem to be the real deal. Nolan, Gorman, Carlson and Goldschmidt will be the best group of hitters in a lineup we have had in quite a while.

There will be a little bit of a defensive let down, yes, but albeit in a much smaller sample size Edman and Wong have a similar OBP.

Edmans ZiPS projection is like 310 OBP. Edman had a decent OBP his rookie year but he also had a 350 BABIP. With the exception of 2018, Wong has carried a 350 or better OBP since 2017.

There are suggestions that Wong is just a trainwreck waiting to happen as virtually all of his numbers have been declining at the plate for a few years. His xWOBA last season was just 286, but it was a short season and his trajectory was heading up, but it was also the lowest of his career in 2019 at 307 and 309 in 2018. But what are we talking about with Wong? Didi just got 2/24 so what's Wong looking at? 2/18? 2/20? I'd take that gamble to have someone that at least gets on base for Goldy and Arenado.

Ever since Edmans honeymoon phase ended his trajectory has been going down. He similarly doesnt hit the ball hard, like Wong, but he also lost 6 degrees on his launch angle last season and his trajectory is just nothing but a downward arrow.

How did Darvish “work out”? 6/$129 deal. Halfway thru he had been paid $65M and returned only $45M in value. Then dumped for a bucket of shag balls and a large anchovy pizza.

They are expected to announce Yadi coming back this week. I read last week before the Arenado trade that Cards and Wong still communicate but no substance has been shared.

Darvish has been the 3rd best pitcher in the game since about midway through 2019 behind DeGrom and Bieber. What the Cubs traded him for is irrelevant to how he has actually performed. Darvish was 44% of the Cubs pitching WAR last season.

And its way too early to grade what the Cubs got in return because they traded for 4 prospects and 3 havent even played professional baseball yet, but were some of the most expensive signings on the IFA.

The Nolan Arenado-to-St. Louis trade is official. Other players in the deal have been informed. The return for the Rockies: Left-hander Austin Gomber and prospects Elehuris Montero (3B), Mateo Gil (3B), Tony Locey (RHP) and Jake Sommers (RHP).

Montero was more or less expendable as well with the arrival of Arenado and Gorman looming, although Gorman may not stick at 3B defensively.

Same here. Seems like a surprisingly nice trade and will be interesting to hear a little more of how the financial details worked out on the $50M the Rockies are on the hook for.

Just saw this summary on mlbtraderumors

St. Louis is now getting one of the game’s premier infielders, and the team will reportedly add another year and $15MM to Arenado’s contract. As such, he’ll be signed through 2027 at $214MM. The Rockies will absorb $51MM, including some in deferrals, according to Feinsand. The Rockies will pay all of Arenado’s $35MM salary in 2021, Jon Morosi of MLB.com relays.

Along with the added value to his deal, Arenado will be able to opt out of his pact after either of the next two seasons (the Cardinals added the second opt-out as part of the trade; most of the money the Rox owe will be after the opt-outs, Feinsand adds).
