Yeah, the cap was put in place back in the day because the built in formula was getting out of hand. People who have been around a long time and post a lot could bury a n00b with one blow.

It's a completely useless system, really, so nothing is "a problem." The reason it's wonky though is the relative power of people. People who post a lot and have been around for a long time are WAY more powerful than newer people, and there's nothing newer users can do to ever catch up. To give you the idea, the most powerful people have rep power of around 15k. The median for people who have posted since November 1? 178. It's just way too skewed to mean anything. (Not that it does with the 500 cap either.) [Reply]
