Nzoner's Game Room>-- Let's talk about counting calories & routine
Simply Red 09:38 AM 03-29-2018
Hi Guys,

I'm up to a 36 waist - thanks to Del Taco and a few others. As well as eating pretty poorly over the last year, or so.

I'm on a strict regimen now and doing a three week diet and then merging it into a new way of life. I have a history of eating well (normally) - but, again; have been quite clumsy over the past year or so.

My plan is to limit myself to 1100 calories a day the first week, then up to 1200 the second week, and then stay on or around 1500 calories as the norm, with one cheat day per week.

After the third week - I'll get back into some sort of exercise, which too will be part of the new 'way of life'

In this thread I'd like to discuss food ideas for assisting myself (& others) with weight loss.

Since Monday I've not gone above 1100 calories/daily - I have eaten oatmeal, oranges, bananas, hard-boiled eggs and in closing, in the evening - I'll eat one of the Chick Fil A Spicy, grilled chicken wraps w/o dressing (350 cals)

I'm open to ideas - but the goal is - finding items that are a little less common and more creative.

Please assist at your leisure - anyone else need assistance or interested in jumping aboard, I welcome it.

Thanks again

I know what you mean.

I bet you like it better when you have no other goals than to get better. Its not a contest anymore.

I like to hike our mountains in the summer and I finally found a place near my home to train. There is an old pumphouse along the river that has a long metal stairway going down to it. There is a long hill going down to the stairs. I walk down the hill, go down and up the stairs three times, hike back up the hill through a little loop and repeat. I only did the loop five times yesterday before my legs were jello but it's a start. My fitbit said I did 41 flights of stairs and 49 minutes of exercise, so :-).

Dog wasn't too sure about getting left behind on the stairs.

Nice. :-)

Doesn't just have to be weights, but that would be your best bet.

But since you've only mentioned walking try some variations of intervals. Walk really fast paced for a minute, then one minute normal. Alternate these over 1-2 miles to elevate and maintain a higher heart rate.

Get on a bike. Alternate hard sprints with easy pedaling. Again, keeping your heart rate elevated.

Try walking stairs or walking hills if you can find them. Again, keep your heart rate elevated.

See where I am going with this? You need something to elevate your heart rate a bit more, be higher intensity and burn more calories for you than just walking can at this point.

l knew l was going to have to lift weights to get to my short term goal and long term goals. Been putting it off as long as possible. I’m already a member at a good YMCA with all the best equipment. Going to have to figure out what works best for me.

The majority of people that are successful long term lift weights and do cardio. I’m thinking I probably should do what works for most people. At least until l figure out what works best for me.

I had a couple of 70 calorie dole pineapple frozen bar things tonight - not the end of the world - but not something I'd normally allow - I did only have one meal today. I will weigh again on Sunday - I have yet to do any extensive workouts aside from walking and planks. I'll get back to that though - you can believe it.

36. I burn too many calories at work for my eating habits to catch up with me.

I’ve cut my times on the 3-5 mile daily walks by 33% now. It’s getting harder because it’s Flirida and it’s heating up quick this time of the year. Carrying bottles of water throws off my balance and speed.

I know people take backpacks full of bricks/rocks with them to run/workout. But, I’m already carrying my bag of bricks around my waist. :-)

It looks like I've not plateaued but just losing weight "semi-normal". Lost 10lbs this month. I'm still eating a daily average of 800 calories below goal of losing 2 lbs a week. Not counting any exercise calories.

Doing some research on the physiology equations of calories when walking. The effect on the body and calories lost. It looks like there is an agreement that the main factors are weight and distance. Speed only increases the calories lost about 10%-15%. Getting your heart rate up to improve heart health and increase metabolism is a great reason to increase speed but not a big factor to increase your calorie loss during exercise.

Going to get a heart monitor to wear during exercise to make sure my heart rate is staying up. Any recommendations?

Down 85lbs total.

I have a Fitbit Charge 2 that does heart rate. It has matched up pretty well when tested. I don't like the kind that goes around your chest when working out as I think they are too restrictive and uncomfortable, though they are probably slightly more accurate.

Good job guys - I weighed on Friday - still at 216 however a coworker just said that she'd noticed and felt I'd lost more weight since Friday. So that's refreshing. I have to go poop now - so 'fingers crossed!'

I was down to 206 this morning after an up day yesterday. My seven day average is at 207.2 now. I am hoping to see a 20 lb loss by the first as that will be two months but I can't force it.

Also, if you are losing weight, I highly recommend getting an app to smooth out the scale numbers. Libre is one for Android and Happy Scale for iOS. You enter your weight in every day and it will give an average and show a graph of that moving average. Only when it flatlines for a while are you in a real stall and probably need to check your numbers again.

Usually if you hit a stall in your weight loss, you need a refeed type of day to bump your metabolism back up.
