Saccopoo Memorial Draft Forum>We need to talk UFA corners.
Direckshun 09:24 AM 11-27-2018
Who is:

(a.) likely to be cut, or
(b.) likely to be allowed to walk by their team,

and

(c.) affordable for us?

We're probably looking at drafting or (or three) corners high in the draft, but we're probably going to have a one-year mid-level stopgap corner in 2019.

Who would that guy be? Anybody know? I only watch the Chiefs these days so I don't know who is non-elite-but-still-good, and who will be let go by their teams this year.

I've bolded the players I'm interested in. Is there anywhere online that ranks these players right now? I don't have (or want) a PFF subscription.

Anyone over the age of 30 I'm probably out on.

That’s probably going to happen, though. They’re cheaper.

They can also be perfectly fine.

Sure, if you plan on just a 1 year deal.

If you go young you give yourself a chance that a guy actually fits and plays well and you can keep him a few more eyars on the cheap.

I’d prefer we attack corner in the draft mostly. Sign one veteran. Maybe Nelson.

We're not affording Darby. We're probably not affording Claiborne.

Dennard and Ward both make a ton of sense as elite prospects who haven't panned out exactly as expected. We know Veach loves reclamation projects.

Rowe makes some sense, too. He's a good player but coming back from an injury, which makes him cheap, and maybe a prime candidate for a 1 year "prove it" deal.

Verrett on a prove it deal.

I don't think there's any chance San Diego lets Verrett walk.

If they do, I think you just sign him up and he's young and talented enough you don't have to burn multiple high picks on corner anymore.

Oh you.

You can bet your ass they'll let him walk. And when he does, the best he'll get is a vet min 1 year deal.

He has PROVEN he's a massive health liability.

Claiborne won't be worth it and if they want Darby they can sign him. They were about to make Earl Thomas the richest, or 2nd richest safety in the NFL.

They paid Watkins 16mill to be a 3rd/4th receiving option.

If they want someone bad enough the Chiefs have proven time and time again that money is no obstacle.

It's simply a matter of how bad they want said player and if they think he's worth it.

Then we don't want him. Right?

Why the hell would we want that on us?

Considering Darby will be coming off of a torn ACL.....he's not getting a big money deal.

I'd say that will be exactly the plan.

The depth at CB fell apart when nobody developed worth a damn. So while we're trying to bring more DBs in here to try to develop and find new young starters and quality depth, we'll need some cost-effective stop-gaps.

I have no problem with another Scandrick situation, but I hope they're a little more proactive with it this time. They'd have been in real trouble had he not shaken free. Next time bring in 3 or more of those veteran flyers with little in the way of guaranteed money and put them against each other.

We're probably gonna be worse at CB next year than we are this year, sadly. That's just what's going to happen in this league when your youth fails to come through. It takes a couple years to get that straightened back out (and better defensive drafts, IMO).

Bryce Callahan and Justin Coleman are pretty good slot corners, especially Callahan. I'd have them on the list if they shake free. I like EJ Gaines enough to bring him in on the cheap.
