Nzoner's Game Room>I'm all about Elon Musk doing his thing but Starlink...

... is gonna get on my fucking nerves. While I realize these are not the first low orbit satellites it seems that these are extremely bright and form a chain which are extremely eye catching and, IMO, take away from the night's sky.

I took this photo about 2 hours ago.

:-) I hope this is sarcasm.

It is a trade off. Yes you will have to put up with light pollution these satellites will produce but you will also reap the benefit of a world connected by the internet. You don't get to have a modern world and a pristine natural world. We get to choose and our nature is to choose to make things easier for us. Bees make honey, humans pave paradise and put up parking lots.
I get the trade off and don't misunderstand... I'm SUPER happy that this is going to get internet access to people that didn't have access before. 100% for it. Needs to happen.

Understanding this doesn't make it any less annoying. I'm sure I'll grow accustomed to it eventually and it won't bother my brain anymore but I live in butt-fuck Missouri and man... that shit is bright out here without light pollution from the city.

DEC was barely run at all.

Well it was run by engineers, and that's why their superior equipment was never able to compete with Big Blue's well-trained sales force.

Anybody I know from that era who had to work on both platforms know exactly what I'm talking about. The Alpha chip should have killed IBM, but they just didn't know how to market it. But we sure loved being the group using DEC while the others labored to get their IBM stuff to run.

Sales is king..

I suppose you could draw parallels with Apple/Microsoft. In both cases, the company that provided a platform for an entire new industry won.

Yep. So easy. That's why every one of us here on Chiefs Planet are millionaires.

"AKA marketing" is more like Ford calling their turbo chargers, "ecoboost". Ford doesn't have ecoboost fanatics.

100% agree.

God I miss DEC! Hell, and if you're old enough to remember, I still have the jar of Vaseline (laugh all you want!!!) that I used back in the day for making clean vampire tap connections on thick-wire Ethernet for the backends (:-)) of the clusters and into the routers. DECnet, DELNIs, VTs, all things that make me hard! Yeah, that's when network engineers new our shit and could run the VAX too... Running ribbon cable in AGS and AGS+ routers, 20-part IOS volumes on the shelf. Good times...

I have this theory, that if I sent a hand written letter to every billionaire on earth asking for a couple million dollars. And resend it every week and pester them stating my cause. Perhaps they might just give it to me eventually. It only takes one.

Elon giving me 2M is like $2 dollars to the average joe. I'll be a pro billionaire wealth peddler.

Billionaires pay people to keep people like you from pestering them. You'd be better off sending resumes. Once you get a job working for a billionaire, make some silly bet them, your income for a day against his/hers and hope you win.

I suppose that his sleep-deprived antics where he has directly attacked people on Twitter can be seen as a sign of immaturity. I'd just call it dumbassery, but I could be convinced otherwise.
Musk is neither stupid or immature. He is the worlds wealthiest smart ass.
Yes he is very intelligent. He does smoke too much weed, in my opinion.

They read their tweets don't they? I guess I'll have to craft some shamelessly self pitying tweet.

They will not look like that long term. This is what they look like as they slowly separate and climb into their proper orbit. You won't be able to see them when they reach their final orbit. Their have been people posting some really cool videos of these "trains" for a year now. To me it's akin to going outside and watching the ISS travel over head. Even though it is MUCH MUCH brighter and larger, you probably never notice it since there is only one "dot" moving across the sky.

There are concerns from astronomers, but it appears SpaceX is trying to work with them to minimize the interference. For us regular folk it shouldn't be an issue. Hopefully the issues for astronomers can be resolved.

Also, considering there are no stars in your picture, I would counter that you have no night sky left to pollute. :-)

It's a work in progress.

Consider all the current satellites as beta. They still aren't doing laser communications between satellites. I expect this is an issue they'll be working on through 2021.
