Saccopoo Memorial Draft Forum>Are you willing to trade up in the first for an LT?
ntexascardfan 02:45 PM 03-16-2021
If so, how much draft capitol are you willing to give up for them and who do you want?

This scenario is absolutely absurd. You're basically nuking two drafts to get a tackle. You only do this shit for a QB.

The way I see it is there are generally 2 ways to get a good LT from the bottom of 1, either you trade a lot for a good veteran or you trade a lot to move up in the 1st. It's rare you get a good one in FA like we have this year.

As a rule, good tackles run out by pick 22 in the draft. That's your floor. Now, every once in a while you luck out and get one that develops from the mid-rounds (4th/5th).

With teams at 20-21 needing a LT, it's likely that the floor this year is 19. If you don't get Williams you're left with trading a lot for a good veteran (Orlando Brown) or trading a lot to move up in the 1st (at least a 2nd round pick).

You're only other hope is praying a guy develops for you from the mid-rounds, but then there's the question of what you do while that happens because that development likely isn't happening in 2021.
They absolutely must acquire a tackle in free agency, if just a stop-gap for 2021.

They have no business starting two rookies at both tackle spots. That's ridiculous.

No, you would only do this for a QB.

Many an NFL team have traded up for premier positions. There's actually nothing absurd about that.

If we continue to be as good as we have been we need to start thinking of our picks as 2nd round picks not first round.

There is a reason a number 15 pick is worth so much more than a 31. It is worth a conversation to trade up for a top tackle or edge rusher if they drop and we really rate one of them.

Having a rookie LT for 5 years on a rookie deal could save us $60-90m over the length of the contract.

I think it is worth moving up if they really rate someone there. It means you can spend a lot more on other positions.

If Frank Clark leaves next year and we replace him with a top rookie it would definitely be worth trading up for. Given the $20m per year cap saving.

It's the second most important position on the offensive side of the ball, so yeah.

Here’s the issue with going into the draft with no LT.

You HAVE to trade up because teams in the top half of the second round are going to be trying to jump you for a LT because they know you need one. We won’t be able to sit at #31 and wait for someone to fall.

With this team, the contract situations we have, and the current state of the roster, trading up for a tackle is a tremendous waste of resources.

I don't care what other teams do. How many of them are Super Bowl championship caliber teams? Not many. Trading up in the 1st round for anything other than a QB almost never works. In fact, a lot of those guys fail outright.

Which means we're going to pay a fucking king's ransom to trade up. We have zero leverage.

All the more reason to get a free agent in here ASAP.

Wouldn't it be a better use of resources? They need a legit LT, they've shown they can fill those other areas in more easily than LT which usually comes early in the draft.

The draft is still a crapshoot.

Wrapping up multiple first and seconds for an unknown is super risky and if it's a miss, you're screwed for two years or more of a championship window.

And not having a LT could be pretty detrimental to Mahomes health.

I'd take the risk on a player they think it worthy of trading up for if they think it prudent.

What about signing Okung to a 1-year deal as a stop-gap and then drafting Radunz?

Chances he misses half a season for a 3rd straight year?

Okay, well first off, the team WILL have a left tackle. It's not like they're trotting out 10 guys on offense.

But there's absolutely no reason to panic, especially 2 days into free agency.

They need to have a good LT. Those aren't easy to find.
