I think you’d have to agree that fewer MVPs than Aaron Rodgers would be a massive disappointment. [Reply]

And even if a lot of GMs would have traded for Wilson in that situation (very debatable, as a lot of people had acknowledged that he was in decline and losing athleticism), they wouldn't have given up four 1st/2nd rounders and three talented players to get him. And then turned around and given him a ludicrous contract with a $50 mil signing bonus before he stepped foot on the field. :-)
On the other hand if you believe he was worth 1st/2nd and 3 talented players...you had to sign him long term and he pretty well knew he was getting an overflated contract. It really becomes pretty circular. Someone worth 1st/2nd and 3 players=someone you believe worth a huge contract. [Reply]

The extension was by FAR the biggest foul-up there.
The trade was a bit of an overpay but that's what QBs cost. But with that trade, they had some real financial flexibility baked into his deal. Then gave him an extension that set it all ablaze.
The extension should've gotten Paton fired. Maybe not the trade - I'll concede that there were reasons to believe it could've worked out and/or it was a necessary risk to get back to truly relevant.
But man, that extension was just so very, very bad. [Reply]
