According to PFF, Justin Houston has dropped into coverage 60 times this year. That's 26 percent of the passing plays he's been on field for

Note that’s 26 percent of passing plays, not all plays. That’s the third highest among “true edges”, according to the next tweet.
Just curious who are the first two?

Yeah.. **** you Bob Sutton. That's trolling the very team that pays him, no?
That article was from the 19th of October. We've played 2 games since then. I wonder what the stats are now? I would wager worse.

Notice though, yesterday in the 1st quarter Houtson was rushing the passer and the D was forcing punts. He stopped and well, the D was watching the other team score....

That is a different story. Our 3rd and long package is terrible. But that's not what most people are upset about. They're upset about Houston being in coverage regardless of down.

Look at all that pressure we put on Carr on the game winning play...

3rd and long and other key situations.....you don't give QB's all day to stand back there and wait for someone to come open....

I said this in another thread, but will repeat this here. The offense never puts the defense in a bad situation, the special teams never do either. 23-24 PPG allowed when basically no points were scored off of turnovers or long returns allowed is FUCKING garbage. Terrible. This team would give up near THIRTY PPG if the offense was league average at ball security or if our special teams wasn't amazing.

I'm not a fan of the cushion either. But we're not getting consistently beat underneath except for long yardage situations when we seem to play a lot more prevent. Most games, we've done fine on the underneath stuff. It's the deep ball where we've been god awful.

If we cover the 50/50 balls like average players, that hasn't worked badly... against a certain type of team. It's frustrated the hell out of Brady, Rivers, and Wentz. We would've frustrated the hell out of Carr if not for him just chucking shit up. Against a power offense like Pitt or Dallas, yeah we have to think of something much different.

If you rush the god damn passer and don't give them time to wait for WR's to get 40 yards down field for those jump balls then we don't have to try and cover them.....

QB pressure = less time for QB to wait on WR's = shorter throws = no conversion on 3rd & long....

This isn't fucking rocket science

If you rush the passer you usually need to send 2 or 3 guys in there. A good QB like Brady is going to carve you up on the hot route on underneath shit all day long. It's not like QBs are throwing to open receivers 40 yards downfield. Wentz and Carr were just chucking shit up in the air. That's a strategy that should get you picked off more often than not. Brady, Rivers, Wentz, and Carr (when not just chucking up airballs) were visibly frustrated. It's a mixture of us being just completely terrible at jump balls and the unfortunate NFL trend to completely ignore OPI that's put us in a really bad place. But if we were even average against the jump ball, our defense against Oakland and Philly would have put up a decent performance.

Did you see the picture I posted? Did you see where Houtson was? Did you see anyone in a red shirt around Carr? And guess what..he threw the game winning pass on that play.....not even worried about a pass rush....

In the Raiders' last 5 plays....
They got a miraculous first down on a 50/50 ball to Cook where we had two red shirts in a position to make a play. We had a 5 man rush that led to a Crabtree push-off. We had two 3-man rushes where we made a stop but had senseless PIs. We ended the game with a 5-man rush on a quick pass on a designed rollout. That's a pretty loose assumption to say that Houston not rushing the passer was the reason we lost that game. That last play was an aggressive blitz. I still go back to that 50/50 ball to Cook that we absolutely positively should not have let happen. Not to mention the dozens of times Carr didn't even bother to read the defense... just chucked up a moon ball and we tripped over our own feet or got jobbed on a missed OPI call.
