KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chiefs tight end Demetrius Harris was suspended for one game by the NFL for violating the league's policy on substance abuse, it was announced Tuesday.

Harris, the Chiefs' No. 2 tight end behind Travis Kelce last season, will sit out the season opener against the Chargers on Sept. 9 in Los Angeles.

"We respect and support the league's decision in this matter and will have no further comment on the situation,'' the Chiefs said in a statement.

In March, Harris was sentenced to two days in jail and fined $500 after pleading guilty in Bates County (Missouri) Circuit Court to one count of marijuana possession and one count of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

Harris was also given two years' probation and ordered to complete 80 hours of community service and an NFL drug program.

Harris, 26, has played four seasons with the Chiefs. Last season he set career highs for receptions (18) and yards (224).

He is eligible to participate in all offseason and training camp practices and preseason games.

Pretty severe punishment for weed considering they hand out heroin like Halloween candy in the NFL.

Free agent TE Marcedes Lewis will visit the Packers this week.
Lewis was released by the Jaguars more than two months ago, and this is the first known interest we've seen emerge for him. He just turned 34 last week and spent 12 seasons with Jacksonville. Green Bay has Jimmy Graham and Lance Kendricks at tight end, but Lewis could provide help as a blocker. May 23 - 12:11 PM

He's lucky that was all he got. Pat Mahomes is going to either expose his inability to catch difficult passes, or he's going to make him look like a stud.

He did make quite the spectacular catch in that 3rd down conversion at Denver last season...he CAN catch, he just usually doesn't...

I guess Veach is going younger, but Lewis is still a good blocker.. would love to see him land here.

I dont think Harris can be released even if Andy caught him plowing his wife over the trunk of his car. I think Harris must be Mormon.
