Alex Smith had a chance to to take the 2019 chiefs to the super bowl. Multiple times.

And he never made it past the Divisional round.

This is why I'm avoiding the national media coverage.

Patrick Mahomes averaged 37 points a game with Kareem Hunt.

He should go back and watch the 2016 Steelers game.

I keep trying to post that gif of Alex staring at Tyreek running down field wide fucking open and Alex turtling into a shell and taking the Checkdown, but it won’t load.

Anyways, I was at that game. Multiple plays like that happened. Alex fucking sucked, we lost, I was pissed.

I doubt that. But you have a lot of speed out there at WR. So it would help him I'm sure.

Since the discussion revolves around just how valuable each QB might be, I think the advanced metric "PAA" is a good one. It helps show when the traditional stats might be pretty misleading.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/qbr/_/seaso...qbpaa/dir/desc

PAA = Points Added above Average QB

It sounds pretty similar to WAR in baseball. In 2017, Alex led the league in "traditional" passer rating. But his PAA grade was 6th in the league at +32 points above an average QB. Pretty damn good. Brady won the MVP and was graded +49 in PAA.

In 2019 season, Mahomes' traditional stats appear similar to Alex from 2017. But the PAA grade for Mahomes is +52 points, which was second in the league behind MVP Lamar Jackson at +63 points. Mahomes' 2018 season as MVP was graded +72 in PAA.

So Patrick's traditional stats were basically identical to Alex, yet his grade in this advanced metric is 60% higher than Alex (+52 vs +32)...and that was Alex's best year ever. 2019 featured Mahomes with nagging injuries, OL injuries, and so forth.

The bigger issue of course is the playoffs. Alex just could not get it done on the big stage. Mahomes is currently having an insane playoff run. They have graded him at +21 PAA through only 2 games. That's basically already tied the all-time record by Peyton Manning in 2009, except Manning needed 3 games to get to a +21 PAA grade. Russell Wilson had a freaking great performance in the playoffs and graded at +10.6 PAA for 2 games. Patrick doubles up his value. Mahomes is just off the charts good in this playoff run.

2017 - 264 Yards 2 TD 0 INT 116.2 Rating (we lose to titans 22-21)
2016 - 172 Yards 1 TD 1 INT 69.7 Rating ( we lose 18-16)
2015 - 190 Yards 1 TD 1 INT 98.7 Rating ( we win 30-0)
2015 - 246 Yards 1 TD 0 INT 77.6 Rating ( we lose 27-20)
2014 - 378 Yards 4 TD 0 INT 119.7 Rating ( we lose 44-45)

Every loss we endured with smith in the post season was less than 3 points besides the new England game in 2015. He was a quarterback you could win a SB with, but he doesn't have the "it" factor Mahomes has that will simply throw all the shit to the side and win it for you.

Like many here I was at that game. If the gif doesn’t have sound it will be absent the sound of the crowd all at once realizing a game turning play was possible just to see the QB do the equivalent of a running back going out of bounds with one man to beat just to avoid contact. The sad echo of despair rattled around that stadium and stayed as a wretched murmur the rest of the game. I left more pissed about this than the Houston covering AB silliness.

Alex could run a system, but he couldn't take a team on his back and carry to it a win. That said, Mahomes weapons right now far exceed those AS had.

24-0 and Alex Smith would still be trying to rack up more hidden TDs.

I managed to watch about 20 seconds of the Stephen Smith video before I had to turn it off. He's just too annoying, and I'll never forget that great piece of "analysis" where he was talking about how the Chiefs would match up against the Chargers with DJ against Henry in coverage in the season after DJ left and Henry was on IR...
