Nzoner's Game Room>20 Years Ago Today
gblowfish 10:55 AM 01-23-2020
The auto accident that killed DT's friend and eventually took his life. Speeding to the airport to fly to St. Louis for the Rams-Bucs NFC Championship Game on a weather day much like today.

Hard to believe it's been 20 years.

Drive safe out there, and for God's Sake BUCKLE UP.

I've lost some of sports idols to tragedies: Roberto Clemente, Joe Delaney, Derrick Thomas.

Hurt each time more than expected.

I can't believe it has been that long. It hardly seems like it. RIP DT. Shit, I'm old.

Sad, sad, sad. The wife and I flew back in from Seattle and the trip from the airport to home that normally took about 45 minutes took close 3 hours. Nasty, nasty roads. Even the old Explorer was having issues keeping it on the road.

Wasn't DT always running late and waiting until the last second to get to where he was going? I think I remember Carl Peterson, Marty, and Gunther saying he had a tardy problem. His seven sack game against Dave Kreig and the Seahawks was EPIC! He had DK in his grasp for Number 8 on the very last play of the game but DK slipped away to throw a game winning TD as time expired. That was so messed up.

I remember that day well. We were in St. Joe visiting my daughter and it started to snow. We waited the snow out, but I decided not to take 59 back to Atchison and south back to Topeka and decided to take I-29 to I-70 back to Topeka. Everything was fine until about 1/2 way to Platte City and then the highway patrol routed us off 29 onto some little highway until Tracy. There was a huge pile up in which several people were killed just north of there. The drive down 435 was a joy. There were at least 6 cars down the hill just before you go over the river into Kansas. Once we got into Kansas, all the lanes were clean and dry. Go figure.
We didn't hear the news about DT until that night, but when I heard he was thrown from his car, I knew it was over for him.
What was played down in the aftermath was a rumor that he was to meet with some other teams after the NFC game. His contract was up and he wanted to get paid.

Yes. There is a documentary where Gunther tells him his lateness is going to be trouble someday. Then cries.

I'm gonna try to get over to his interment spot in Opa Locka to pay respects before the game on Sunday.

He was THE reason I fell in love with the Chiefs.

Can’t believe it’s been 20 years. Miss DT every day, especially during football season... wish he was here on this earth to experience this with us in the flesh. But I know he’s with all of Chiefs Kingdom
