His defense lacks any sense of toughness and attack. He doesn't dictate anything. When he blitzes he blitzes to blitz and not to dictate what the ofense can and cannot do.
Take Wade Phillips on the other hand. The guy instantly upgrades any defense he coaches regardless of talent. Why? Because he has a defense that dictactes what an offense must do. Not sit back trying to defend against any and everything possible.
Preseason or not, toughness and an attacking mentality are something that shows regardless. Sutton's defenses are soft, reactionary and undisciplined.
How this guy still has a job bogles the minds of most. But I am afraid what we've seen the last few years is what we will see again. Minimal attack, dependency on a turnover. Lots of time on the field defensively. [Reply]
Bend but don't break can look a lot better if the front seven can stop the run without help. Or the OLBs have a big year. I don't see the secondary making the improvement. [Reply]

As far as getting younger and better goes, there will probably not be any rookies starting on either side of the ball, or getting significant playing time barring injury. It's not an especially young team overall.
We're running out more or less the same formula this year as last year, minus Peters, plus Mahomes. While that will be a lot more entertaining, it probably isn't going to translate to results.
Guys on the Chiefs defense who would start for 90% of the teams in the NFL: Houston, Berry, Ragland, Hitchens, Jones, and Fuller.

I'm afraid he just lacks the strength to ever be a solid run defender. On that play, you can see he's so overwhelmed, he focuses 100% on the blocker, ignoring the ball carrier entirely in the process.
Houston disengages as the RB approaches the hole and squeezes inside to stop that play for a 1-2 yard gain. [Reply]

His 2014 and 2015 defenses were near tops in the league. Last year's defense was awful. None of his defenses have been "middle of the road". Not one. [Reply]

Just curious what others think: When you look at the defensive rosters of other teams that did so much better than the Chiefs in 2017, do you see a huge disparity in the talent level?
How would have the Vikings' defense ranked last year if Sutton was coaching it? :-) Or Pittsburgh, if you want a top five 3-4 defense. I'm still floored by the difference between how Houston was used compared to similar players last year and before:
